Over $1 million to plant a damn tree? Is a mature tree a CoV requirement? Why not plant a younger tree that can be brought up through the service elevator and just let it grow over time?

But yeah, virtue signaling should be made Vancouver's official sport.

I don't think it's $554,000 + $500,000 - I think the $500,000 reference was a summary of the $554,000+cost of tree.

I think there's only 1 suite per floor - so $554,000 /$35,000 is about 16 units.

Either way it's a bit nuts.

From what I recall the requirement for a mature tree is not a standard CoV bylaw or anything, but a particular one off deal as part of the building's entitlement.

Sorry, you're right. I read it quickly and thought it said $554,000+cost of the tree @ $500,000

Quote:
The result? A final bill for replacement estimated at $554,000 and that’s before the cost of the tree itself: $500,000 to replace a tree.
Either way, as LeftCoaster said, it's nuts!

I'm surprised they didn't have the tree covered by the building insurance, I would imagine it would now lol. Imagine if it this one dies in a few years. Ouch

maybe they'll learn to water it...

its a flower pot, of course it needs hand watering. there is no ground water 16 floors up.

I can purchase a brand new car with $35,000. So this is nuts for sure. What a waste of money and resources when a young tree can absorb all the un-necessary tree-hauling cost by gorwing up on its own. Question to CoV: How does this justify being green?

My friend lives there and they said the strata is very corrupt. Lots of lawsuits going on with various owners against the council

So if there weren't really thoughts on how to care for this originally, has anything changed in the building to allow for proper root depth now? Or are the poor owners going to be shelling out another $1M for a new tree in another 10 years?

Bute Street between Robson and Haro is now a park, I hope it's just for summer.

That's the Bute Street Plaza. For now, it's a temporary public plaza at Robson and Bute Streets, from July 1 to October 16.

The City's website says "Featuring modular seating and a public piano, this car-free space will be a space for people to sit and socialize, relax, and hold small events.

During the pilot, we will test different configurations, measure traffic impacts, and engage with the community on a potential permanent plaza in this location."

Yes, Bute, ( I've correct my original post ) thanks auto-correct! .. Seems if Vision is mulling a permanent plaza, you can bet it's gonna happen. If it does become permanent, they'll need to allow right turns again off Robson to Jervis otherwise West End access is going to become extremely difficult, just like it is from Davie now.

The special assessment is a big bite, but i would be surprised if the condo owners/strata wasn't aware of the tree's requirement. Strata would also have to know that roof membrane maintenance would be inevitable, especially with the roof's special demands.

The eugenia was built ~1987 so hopefully strata would start a contingency fund for the next membrane/tree replacement in the next 30 yrs.
