Considering how laughable their website questionnaire was, i.e. "what kind of hotel would you like to see at this property", I can only presume that they have done anything except engage market experts at this point.

Never seen a city like Edmonton with so much skepticism on any building proposal .Other cities embrace it Edmonton seems to have a 19 Century attitude and seem to think everything is a crooked poker game . Why Calgary started to fly by Edmonton as a downtown and office building city. Boy a lot of posters in here sure must of been scammed a lot in their lives

Nail it right on the head.

The negative energy is still truly astounding to me.

Hey Edmonton.....this proposal is amazing.

Sad when this has to be said!

Fantastic news! The only sad thing in that report was a proposed 2019 start date...

I would love this to kick off a race to build the next tower beyond Aldrittt. That magic 300M/984' mark... That would make it Western Canada's first true super-tall..

Plus like I've said since I've been on this forum my ideal vision for the Edmonton skyline is Manhattan on the Plains with towers lining Jasper Avenue from end to end. 124 St in the West to 82 Street on the East and towers as far North as the 111th Avenue/Kingsway area... and with at least a good half dozen 300M anchor towers to spice things up...

Young padawan, I see you need to take the rose coloured glasses off. The skepticism around this proposal is warranted. The proponents do not have the track record of developing a high density project such as this NOR have they partnered with someone who has. Don't get me wrong, I hope to see something developed here I really do, but I'm shorting this proposal all day long. Like I've said in other posts about other developments, prove me wrong Alldritt.

And how they've spent $10M to date on this is astonishing. If they have then somebody's being bent over the barrel.

There is questioning a project (in this case understandable), and then there's being flippant. Why not rejoice over such a plan, and if this tower does not proceed, well, at least someone has vision.

I'm sure this skepticism is not what pushed Calgary to win the O&G HQ race, rather a mixture of Ralph Klein and vicinity to the Rockies to attract top talent.

I am skeptic but extremely hopeful. CMD is totally right, the developer behind this just doesn't fit the bill. However, his 'ambitions' to leave a mark with his family legacy are promising. As well as the fact half the building will be a hotel means half the building is already accounted for. Now to get that hotel deal...

While those may have been factors, I'm not sure that's what tipped the balance down south.. I'm sure the better located airport also played a part, as well as how Calgary has consistently improved transportation access to the CBD over the years

Edmonton has done nothing to improve road access to the core since quashing the METS plan, and the LRT while starting off on the right foot, has turned into a mixed bag that has now degraded access to the core in places

It's only natural for people to follow the path of least resistance, so no surprise that over time companies gravitated to a place where workers could have a quicker commute

Anything that "degrades" car access to the core makes downtown a more attractive place to be. I'm frankly glad our downtown isn't like the vertical business park that is downtown Calgary.

well... enjoy those gravel parking lots then? apparently corporate execs felt differently

still don't understand how people think you can increase the population in an area without also improving the transportation network somehow..

Thank you for expressing very eloquently what I tried to express and then hit delete before sending.

(Massive projects like this don't get built using pixie dust, elf tears and unicorn farts.)

Only the most overzealous urbanista would equate poor access with attractiveness in Edmonton. Our downtown needs all the help it can get in being more attractive and 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 everyone off who's trying to get down there isn't going to help. I hear nothing but complaints about how people hate coming down here, on a daily basis.

This ain't Vancouver. Or Calgary for that matter

There's probably a contract in place between the two, but the city could nullify the DC parking clauses. Minimum parking has been reduced or eliminated for the rest of downtown, so there's no reason it couldn't free those sites too.
Westcorp is putting a few mil into the parkade as we speak, it is not going anywhere, nor does it need to.

skepticism is healthy, particularly when offered in a constructive way - as you have done here - the project and developer have significant challenges to address. perhaps cynicism is the more accurate way to describe the reactions of many Edmontonians to development proposals.

emphasis added...

but it's such a prime corner - isn't it a bit of a shame to have it devoted to a parking structure and limiting the potential for rice howard way to be closer to a true pedestrian only environment?

Klein definitely didn't do Edmonton any favours, but this goes back before the Klein years, even as mayor of Calgary. It started in the late 60s and early 70s with Husky Oil/Lougheed and was further exacerbated by the Klein/Reimer years.
