Funny how flat "Mont" Royal looks from this angle.

Funny how it's called a mountain.

It's called a "montagne" in the same way as la montagne Sainte-Geneviève or le Montmartre in Paris. Maybe "montagne" and "mountain" don't have the exact same meaning.

We say "le mont Royal", not "la montagne royale". When Montrealer refer to it as "la montagne", it's like a nick name, like saying "la Main" for Saint-Laurent, even though Sainte-Catherine is the real main stret of the city. But again, no one calls it " la montagne royale. I never heard that.

Nobody calls it a "montagne", but it is sometimes referred to as a "montagne" as a nickname, either by organizations (les amis de la Montagne) or medias. Never heard someone mention the word "montagne" while talking about Mont Royal. There is also a "de la Montagne" street at the base.

Like laceoflight mentioned, I suspect the word "montagne" was once used for any kind of hill, be it very small (the prominence of montagne Sainte-Geneviève in Paris is probably below 50 m) or tall.

I would surmise the use of mountain or montagne is all relative to the surrounding terrain - in many parts of the world Mount Royal (Mont Royal?) would never be considered or called a mountain but for some it is still a mountain. Even the wikipedia article regarding Mount Royal calls it a mountain in it's first sentence as does the city of Montreal's web site (link.

I've been to and hiked about Mount Royal and by my definition, I would never call it a mountain but then again, the Rocky Mountains lie just over an hours drive west of my home which create a different perspective of what mountains are.

Again, it's all relative and even many organizations that try to define what a mountain is haven't come to some conclusive agreement on that definition. So I will continue to find it amusing and others shouldn't be upset by that - it is what it is.

No worry, I don't think anyone is upset. Montrealers are not delusional. We know it's not the Rockies. "La Montagne" is just a nickname. Funny for you, only affectionate for us.

Darned Montrealers. Equating their city to Paris yet again!

London gets a ton of hate (some deserved, some not) on here, but it looks very good here.
