Dear Christy thought that she would not lose any seats because of her games playing with Lower Mainland mayors. And she lost 5 or 6.

After a while politicians always start to think that it is really all about them. They become gods that walk the earth among men, until they don't.

I would never speculate as to just how crazy politicians can get, especially when they seize upon their power to test their "theories". And I would never try and quantify what mistakes they make.

drop a bridge, build a line

A lot of real estate players are apprehensive about the Deas bridge. They don't know if it is going to be dropped when the NDP swoops in.

On the other hand, with the NDP, we might get a UBC line that actually goes to UBC.

All those make believe crisis about funding are just that, political gamesmanship. Politicians play those games because they think they cannot lose, until they do.

Dear Retro Orange :

The hardest thing to do in this thread is to separate politics from transportation.

The transport part is easy .. I like a 200 hp motor .. No, I like a 220 hp motor. No one looks at that sort of conversation as trolling.

But when you get to politics and transport, the danger of "trolling" is always just under the surface. Politics do intrude. Politics means that people can misuse their position of power to make a point somewhere else.

It is always short sighted and almost always stupid, no matter who does it - on the politics side.

The restrictions on us as commentators are that we have to be nice.

The "near troll" brought the federal government into the issue and stated, quite rightly, that it is nearly impossible to oppose them. He is right in that, at least. His expression might have been a little sharp but I would rather have that than no comment at all.

Best to both of you.

What he brought to the conversation was "if the NDP/Greens fight the Feds on KM, you can expect the 40% promised funding to disappear. Goodbye extension....". In other words, if the BC Gov manages to miraculously stop KM the federal government will retaliate by cutting the funding to the Broadway Extension.

I have yet to see one shred of evidence presented to prove this is indeed not simply conjecture. Until then, I will agree with retro_orange that the comments being made here by Trainguy and others are more inflammatory than constructive to the discourse.

For the record I am not associated with any government in any way, other than being a tax payer, and was merely suggesting that when money/funding is involved it is not wise to bite the hand that feeds you.

I am all for building this project all the way to UBC. I am none the wiser about what the Feds will or will not do if the BC government blocks their pipeline project or attempts to. It is a matter of friendly politics and a give and take environment between all levels of government. Pick your battles wisely I say...

It is a fine line, of course. I will leave the decision on who and when to whomever handles it.

Like any thing that has a grey area, you have to make it work. Best of luck on that one.

I suspect that if Energy East had been approved, and the Ontario provincial government did everything to impose it, an new money for Toronto or other Ontario cities for transit from the federal government would be reduced.

That is how politics works. Unless you can prove otherwise, do not call someone a troll for stating a sad reality in politics and funding.

Do you have real examples of this happening? Politics is optics, and if BC obstructs a pipeline based on a majority opinion of voters, then gets further backlash from the Feds, they'll pay badly at the voting booth.

That could possibly happen but the Feds know that elections are decided back east, not in the west. That's just the way the population is spread out.

Actually, I do have an example of "politics".

Dear Christy (and I am a Liberal supporter) put in a referendum a few years back, knowing full well that it would screw up the central Metro area - all NDP supporters. One reason ... saving up money to build yet another unwanted bridge only to seem "great" to her supporters in the suburbs.

Why should she do the right thing and build a great system of RR in Metro, doing away with cars, when she can play politics, play to the car loving suburbs and, as a bonus, show the Vancouver area mayors just who is boss.

Any discussion of transit must, absolutely must, centre as much on politics as on the actual transit.

It is not a question of "find an instance of politics" but rather .. is it possible to find one instance where politics is not the issue.

Exactly.

So, like it or not, that person was not trolling, they were stating what would happen. Just because you do not like it does not make it false.

Predicting exact same info we have been told 100 times before.

Unless they have actual preliminary station designs to show, no point in going.

I love these lines from Translink:

( We're now working with our partners to plan, design, and develop business cases for the provincial and federal government.

If these business cases are accepted and funding from all three levels of government is confirmed in 2017, construction could begin as early as 2019. Construction is expected to take five to six years. )

Lots of if's in there. Will be interesting to see how the Feds react to the new government in BC. A promise of funding is not a firm commitment.

The next phase of consultation is up for the Broadway Extension:

http://www.translink.ca/en/Plans-and-Pro...rojects/Broadway-SkyTrain-Extension.aspx

The survey focuses on things like station features and how manage the effects of construction. Good to see that things are moving along somewhat quickly

I personally would like to see the contract split up into smaller contracts for different sections of the line and given to multiple contractors, so they can construct multiple sections at the same time. Not sure how well it would work but I got the idea from a documentary about Nazi architecture.
