Wife and I do this quite a bit. Get up on a Sunday or Saturday Morning Grab a coffee and point the car randomly in one direction. Just drive with no destination planned. Sometimes down the highway leads to a gravel road and maybe a correction line across a farm field.

Because the terrain changes so dramatically here you never know what you will come across. Some small town finds are great ice cream parlours, or coffee shop that is not a Tims or Starbucks. Now we have the Spirits and Beer guide so the next few trips will take us on a tasting tour.

In Eastern Ontario, what used to be provincial Highway 17 is now County Road 17 in Prescott-Russell, then Ottawa Road 174 (often referred to as Highway 174) in Ottawa city limits for a while. Actually, Highway 17 still exists in one other place near Arnprior as a stub of its former self between the old Antrim Truckstop and former Highway 15 (previously Highway 29 and now Ottawa Road 29). On either side replaced by the excellent Highway 417 such is Ontario and it's convoluted traditional road network numbering. At least all those roads got a fresh coat of pavement after the province gave them away

This is the first of three phases to cover the whole 500m gap between the ville-marie and viger tunnels.



This first phase, in front of the metro station will be a public plaza. The layout hasn't been announced yet, so all we have is this placeholder design until the city unveils the real layout:



The city is considering putting a pedestrian bridge over the remaining exit. Again, a placeholder design:



For the second phase, the convention centre will be expanded over the expressway. The plans for the new convention building are currently being drafted.



The last 250m in the middle is expected to have buildings on top, perhaps a private development. But the first two segments have to be completed beforehand.

Well, considering that Montreal seems to have a better freeway system than Toronto, I would say that they are putting the car and roads first.

Some photos on BC's mountain highways in winter. First, being stuck in a traffic jam on Coquihalla Highway in a blizzard.







Next we are traveling east on Trans-Canada Highway between Salmon Arm and Revelstoke.

Thanks for posting those, Klazu. I drove back to Calgary from the coast a month ago, taking Highway 3 for a scenery change. Driving on the Salmo-Creston (Kootenay Pass), there was still a large amount of snow at the summit for the first week of May.

Was caught in a blizzard on Hwy 3 between Hope and Osoyoos in the last week of May. Its never too late in the season for it, apparently.

I got caught in a June 25 blizzard on the Coquihalla/Okanagan-Collector, back in 1994. Closed the highways behind me. A few years ago I also encountered a major June snowstorm on that Highway 3 (Somewhere in the vicinity of Manning Provincial Park).

Yup, manning Provincial park. I wouldn't be surprised if the road was closed behind us, I had to pull around a jack-knifed truck in the middle of the highway at one point. Zero visibility, flakes the size of your fist, the whole shebang. Went from rain to 6 inches of snow in 30 minutes.

TCH closed near Craigellachie East of Sicamous.

Appears to be a mud slide and washout. This will be a hard route to bypass.

LOL, like how Toronto stopped a freeway being built in 1971 that would have destroyed places like Little Italy and Chinatown? Toronto hasn't built a new hwy in the city centre in 46 years so I don't know what you are talking about. Also unlike almost every other North American city Vancouver included, Toronto didn't rip up it's streetcars to make way for cars.

Yes Toronto made mistakes in the past but show me a north American city that didn't put the car first in the last century. Montreal actually built more hwy's in it's core then Toronto ever did. It's not a bad thing just a fact.

Yes it can, I drove from Vegas over the Cascades to Portland 2 winters ago in a rear wheel drive (Mustang). White knuckled for a good 3 hrs of driving but fun.

Lemme guess. This is all about the Gardiner as if the Gardiner is the entire city that has been on a serious mission to make pedestrian life easier at the expense of drivers. The Gardiner isn't in an open cut. How do you propose Toronto hide it without removing it?
