It boggles my mind that we renovated a major station, and in doing so took away a heavily utilized foot bridge passing over a 4 lane road connecting said station to the metro-area's largest shopping centre without any replacement...

Seriously, I feel that this would happen nowhere else.

Now we have a foot bridge over Kingsway that connects nothing to nothing at all, but no longer have what might have been our region's busiest...

Hope the stores can survive until the replacement footbridge is built, if it ever get built.

It won't be rebuilt in the same spot. The overhead walkway is supposed to connect with the Skytrain elevators, which would connect at the other end of the bus loop and possibly directly to Station Square.

I too am boggled; beyond boggled . . . and is there a better location than the original? The mall will need to be reconfigured.

And MIPS, we have a Chipotles? And if we do, and we lost it, you would be miffed? Serious or joking?

Speaking of that area, anybody know why they didn't renovate the passageway between A&W and Station Square? I remember they closed it for like a couple years during the Station Square redevelopment but they didn't touch it at all during that time which surprised me. Is that something they're going to renovate later on or are they just leaving it as is indefinitely?

I work right next to this spot and Chipotles and Starbucks are always packed, even since the footbridge has been closed.

No big loss if A&W is closed.

The original main entrance to Metrotown Station went from the ground up to a landing and then up to the platform. The new version of that entrance (and its twin at the other end of the station) will not have that landing - the escalators go from the ground directly up to the platform. There's nowhere to connect an overhead walkway to either of those Skytrain entrances.

The plan was to have the overhead walkway connect to the landing at the center entrance where the elevators are. Two of the three elevators have a stop at the landing.

How many versions of what's going to happen in that area have there been? I remember there being talk on here of the bus loop being moved and another Metrotower being built in it's place. I think there's been talk about the passageway being completely removed and the bus loop not being sheltered too. It's probably easier to leave it alone until a (for real) final decision has been made.

I think that's true too.
If there's issues now about who's to pay for the bridge, you don't want to demolish it in a few years if the bus loop is rebuilt (or built over top of).

It's mainly an American chain. Until I discovered we had one (according to google, there are at least three in the lower mainland now) I was having to wait until I had a reason to go to Seattle to go for Chipotles and it's central to everything so it was massively convenient for me. I'm still waiting though for that Jollibee they were saying was going to open. (here's a source on that)

Well they only opened the first one (in Winnipeg) in December - so it doesn't look like they're going to expand quickly. As long as they don't go down in flames like Target did...

Thanks, I know what Chipotles is, I'd have to live in the outback to have missed their rise. I also know you're serious, but to continue my own tongue in cheek probe: it's really a big deal for you? And Jollibee on the horizon, contain thyself epicurean!

I was at Metrotown today and noticed that a bunch (4 or so) of the ticket machines have been removed. Hopefully this means they moved them to the new entrance as it'll be opening soon. I wasn't at that end of the station so I don't know how far along it is now.

Whenever I travel to the coast because of the price of gas I typically park the car for the day and travel by bus and rail. Services close to stations are great because if I want to take a break before moving on there's something just outside the station and sometimes you don't want to have A&W, chinese, pizza or McDonalds. just call it preference.

I think it would be at least another 1 to 2 months before the west station house can be opened.
I traveled by the station this morning and found there are a fair amount of work to complete. Station house floor tile is almost done. Fare gates have been delivered but they need to be installed. The pavements surrounding the station house are being prepared to be rebuilt. After all these are done, the platform needs to be cleaned up and the temporary exit stair will need to be removed.

I can't remember the last time I did an update of the renovations at the Commercial Broadway station. Some guy waiting on the platform saw me taking pics and started telling me that the construction in the ravine was slow because of the increased frequency of freight trains. Regardless, there is some new steelwork to see now.

I can imagine the work is held up quite a bit by increased freight frequencies through the cut.

The staging area is just off Vernon Drive in the railyard which you can see from the Expo Line as it crosses Clark. There is not much activity, its pretty slow moving since I first saw the structure being staged about a month ago, but, you can see the structure is ready to be taken back through the cut to below the station.

I hope they are going to built a retaining wall after. That soil looks pretty loose and exposed at this stage.
