You guys don't have a municipal architectural committee that rules on such things to try and preserve the aesthetic purity of your hencages neighborhoods? All major Quebec cities I know have that; I'd bet St. John's does too.
Also, I absolutely love that it seems possible to just open a bar (or any other business) at street level in your building if you wish to - just like in the good old days, pre-zoning.

The blue one actually looks like a pretty good renovation (peaked roofs added at some time in the past?), although I don't know that I'd be inclined to put that much money into a row of that kind of housing stock, unless the area is firmly "in transition".
The sloped roofs here are former slum houses. It's basically how all buildings here were before the great fire of 1892. Mansard roof was all the rage here when the city was rebuilt, so there are very few of those sloped roofs left.
And almost all of them are either in the scattered survivors from the former central slum (these houses don't even have foundations):

My real estate investor instincts would tell me that the brick and cream-yellow-vinyl-siding one would really benefit instantly from larger, uniformized style windows, then new siding (just on the front - very few square feet, actually). Maybe even a nicer front door (a few hundred bucks again well spent).

Yes I know it has been like this since the start. Doesn't mean it might not be a bad idea to separate the two. Have an Ugly Canadian culture thread and an ugly Canadian building thread.
I concur, Hickory Sticks are a treat! My brother is a more avid enjoyer of them, though I haven't found any where I live yet...I only find them in Toronto for some reason...
