I noticed many 4-car Mark 2.5s and even some Mark 3s running on Millennium Line today. Do they do that every weekend or was today a special occasion?

They're doing a bunch of track maintenance on the Expo Line this weekend and are running the trains at reduced frequencies, so I guess they're able to divert some of the rolling stock to the Millennium Line.

The Expo line was totally packed and some passengers couldn't get into the train.
I hope Translink doesn't do that again in future as it was not a good passenger experience.

Yeah. I was worried about cutting into the Saturday morning + 12-2PM but the extension to 4:30PM probably left a sour taste in people's minds. It was a hot day too and Twitter comments are indicating the lack of air-conditioning on the Mk Is was seen as a nuisance, I'm not particularly impressed after seeing some pics of Mk IIIs being used on the New West to VCC shuttles on CPTDB (it would've been ideal to prioritize the Mk IIs/IIIs onto Expo from the get-go if they knew that trains were going to be jam-packed). The good thing is that further maintenance is cancelled, as perhaps the extra time allowed them to complete the entire job from the get go.

Luckily the only time I used the Expo Line was in the morning at around 8:30 (and I boarded the train just on-time), after that I wasn't nearby for the rest of the day.

A lot of the MK I cars make a ticking noise in the fan area, so it doesn't surprise me really.

Given the age of the vehicles it's likely that they may have cleaned the fans during refurbishment, but never actually replaced them.

Probably the special routing:

Honestly I like that track routing so much better would make it so much easier for vancouver to Surrey train routes not thinking of what train you need to get on

The reversing west of New Westminster is probably only feasible with the reduced Expo Line frequency due to the track work.

The Transit Network Review Report is here
Quote:
Back in February, we asked you, our riders and neighbours to weigh in on some proposed new bus routes in Silver Valley, Clayton Heights and Morgan Creek communities as well as changes to the 159 and 169 in Port Coquitlam–South Coquitlam.

We heard from more than 1,600 people through the online survey and in-person events!

Based on your feedback during this consultation period, we are moving forward with service to three new areas that aren’t currently served by transit: Silver Valley (Maple Ridge), Clayton Heights (Surrey) and Morgan Creek (South Surrey).

However, listening to our customers, we will not go ahead with the proposed changes to the 159 and 169. Instead, using your feedback, the 159 will be extended to Coquitlam Central Station. Extending the 159 to Coquitlam Central Station will achieve a faster travel time for Port Coquitlam residents to SkyTrain without creating significant negative impacts for existing 159 and 169 customers.

These changes will be implemented as part of our fall Service Changes in September 2017.

You can read the full report here (pdf).

Quite a good article about automating Toronto's subways in the Globe and Mail this morning. It includes some very nice graphics describing the differences between fixed-block and moving-block train control:

NYC Subway Banned Dogs Unless They Fit In A Bag, So These 15 Owners Got Creative.

Josh Starling
When New York City decided to implement policies to ban large dogs from the subway system, pet parents decided to take things into their own hands. The rule stated that dogs must fit into a bag to be deemed travel worthy in the underground. Challenge accepted.
On the surface it seemed that any dog over 10 pounds would not make the cut, but these every resourceful city dwellers beat the system in the best way.
Check out the wonderful result below!

  1. Pit bull in a duffle bag!
  2. Traveling in style.
  3. Little floof.
  4. Sitting pretty.
  5. I could get used to this.
  6. Balto in a bag!
  7. Just too good.
  8. Yes.
  9. Crushed it.
  10. Catching the m-train.
  11. Comfy as can be.
  12. The best.
  13. Backpack or nap sack?
  14. Still getting used to this.
  15. Whatever you say papa!

Idea for Vancouver transit users? (had to post it)

^ Hah! Though I'd argue that #6 looks more like Steele...

Seriously, either you ban all dogs or allow all dogs - did the MTA really think that people wouldn't find loopholes?
