Unfortunately not... I had no idea such an area existed in the suburbs until MolsonEx posted about it a few weeks back: https://goo.gl/maps/Zsqv9SEC7CA2

Its kind of hard to feel sympathy for the couple who are "both on social assistance and she says they have trouble finding permanent housing because they have two dogs." Maybe they should just give up the dogs instead of dragging them into their circle of misery. Seriously?!

This is where Canada's rejects end up folks. If you're going to be homeless you're not going to do it somewhere winter temps are well below freezing.

Yeah — those miserable homeless people! How dare they have the comfort of animal companionship!

Everywhere on the internet, I find people don't seem to have any idea how poor/homeless people live. Case in point

Not to mention the textbook classism, this persistent idea that the system is just so great, anyone who works hard will be successful and people's situations are their own fault.

Give me a straight answer: Do those people sitting outside in the cold deserve to be there? Because they're "rejects"?

Really no different than the Republicans south of the border who claim not having Medicaid will motivate people to save. The ignorant self righteousness of the morally bankrupt.

That Surrey scene reminds me of Boston. Come round a random corner downtown, and the sidewalk is literally blocked, no room to even step between them, with sleeping homeless people.

I know the things with dogs seems strange but most of the people living like that have mental health issues so things don't always make sense to most of us.

Many homeless also have dogs for protection - if you are sleeping outside you are much less likely to be robbed if a dog is present. This is moreso the case for the longer-term "voluntary" homeless (vagrants / hobos). Getting food is apparently not that hard most of the time, although vet services would certainly be an issue. The latter goes for many people with low incomes though. Not trying to advocate anything here, fwiw.

The above is very true. Even if there were enough emergency shelter spots in Greater Vancouver {which there aren't}, many people with good reason do not want to go there as they fear for their safety. They may very well run into the pimps, drug dealers, and violent characters they have been trying to avoid or fled which may be part of the reason they are homeless in the first place. Many people who are homeless due to a mental illness and many feel too confined and claustrophobic in such a small and crowded spot. Also people who are drug addicted are not allowed into homeless shelter so the streets are often their only option.

A good question is why a country like Canada has so many homeless people to begin with.

Well for the past 25 years we've invested relatively speaking very little in affordable housing as a country. (Compared to what we used to.)

Mental health facilities have also been slashed and even eliminated, which also put a lot of people on the streets.

We have other priorities I guess.
