I am not surprised by that anymore but it was initially a bit jarring when I moved here how the sex industry is much more in your face and not kept under wraps.

Quebec is the kind of place where the respectable bowling alley where your kids' birthday party is taking place will think nothing of keeping on the counter advertising cards for the local strip joint with pics of nude women.

Abandoned Crappy Tire. There are still many across the land, after the company decided to upgrade their store design to the archetypal high-ceiling, big-box format with the ridiculous "work, play," etc. signage...sometimes with a Mark's Workwearhouse embedded within.

Rather than renovating (isn't that what Crappy Tire is kinda for?) they went greenfield.

Molson Canadian is nothing more than the Canadian version of that bottled Steer piss, Coors light (or Budweiser). The latter beer is so tasteless, the mountains on the can have to turn blue before drinking...this way, your taste buds will not immediately recognize what a piss poor brew Coors light is. Why it is so popular, I cannot fathom for the life of me.

Speaking of piss, I get pissed off when, at a restaurant, the "domestic" beer featured is Bud, Coors Light, and Molson Canadian. Talk about tasteless terrible choices, and two thirds are Yankee piss.

Bud light lime is the most disgusting beer I have ever tasted. And I have tasted a hell of lot of different beers.

You've just put your finger on one of the biggest problems with how we build our cities.

To say nothing of that fact that Canadian Tire just successfully had every single one of their properties in Ontario devalued by MPAC because "the resale value of a big box store is very low in the current market". Thunder Bay alone has to pay back over $1,000,000 to the company's three properties on Thunder Bay, one of which (the one I posted photos of) has been vacant for over 15 years.

I've been suggesting to city councillors and city planners here (as I am now in a capacity to actually interact with them on occasion) that we should ban the new construction of retail-purpose buildings over 50,000sqft in an effort to undo this problem. By limiting the supply of big box stores, we can bring the value of Canadian Tire's assets back up, which I'm sure would really, really help that company. Instead of building a new 50,000sqft store, let's re-purpose an existing empty one, which we have. I posted a picture of it on the previous page.

I think it was just the fact that it was so run down. Like, major-image-route-bridge-that-hasn't-been-painted-in-50-years run down. The kind of thing that literally doesn't exist in Thunder Bay anymore, our oldest bridge is 110 years old and immaculately maintained; our second oldest bridge is 40, or so? But we're 1% of what Toronto is at best. That things were run down made sense to me, I'm not saying it was illogical, I'm just saying that I wasn't expecting it to be so obvious and in such visible locations. Even my city has the decency to cover up its shameful bits. Our architecture might be out of the 1980s but at least it's not falling apart and covered in rust.

Also keep in mind that until that point, the oldest city I had ever been to was Thunder Bay.

Their failed attempts at trying to look sexy. You reacted perfectly fine.

There is a huge amount of reno work to be done there, as I don't expect it will go in any direction but up.

Yeah visits to see my family in Quebec were always interesting as a kid from conservative Alberta. I still remember walking down St. Catherine's with grand maman and my mom and trying not to stare slack jawed at the billboards of club super sexe advertising their strippers.

We have our share of seedy looking love boutiques and source adult videos etc here too. The difference is we don't have pictures of naked women in public spaces.

It wouldn't last a second against Clockzilla. If Leonardozilla got destroyed with such ease can you imagine how this would fare? The only force great enough to potentially kill the monster lies in Saudi Arabia.
