So arena design, been reading complaints about the bathroom lineups at Edmonton's new arena. Personally, I think what's happening a few hours up the road from me is quite normal as any sporting facility I've been in never has been able to handle the intermission rushes - to expect arena/stadium designers to provide enough bathroom stalls to keep intermission lineups to a minimum would mean a lot more expensive idle space as opposed to optimizing that space in some other fashion.

It would be like in the old days when everyone had a land line telephone in their home - no telephone company designed their network to provide dial tone to every customer in the event that every customer tried to make a call at the same time. Long distance trunking between various places was metered in the same way, the networks were designed for certain amount of load based upon historical usage, population levels and growth/declines, demographics and I would suspect arena/stadium bathroom design is not much different.

^ I have never seen a sports facility, new or old, where there weren't washroom lineups at intermissions when there's a substantial (i.e. more than 80% capacity) crowd.

6,000 seats is a great place to start and should provide an electric atmosphere!! The first top-level pro sports franchise in Atlantic Canada, I'm so happy for Halifax!!!

Canadian Premier League, possibly launching next year, announcement sometime this year. They'll have 6-8 teams to start with and ownership groups from 12 cities have submitted bids apparently. They'll have their own CPL Cup and will compete with Canadian MLS teams for berths in the CONCACAF Champions League by way of the Amway Canadian Championship. It's kind of lonely only having 5 pro Canadian soccer franchises so it's gonna be lots of fun watching almost a dozen Canadian cities competing with each other in the beautiful game!

That Halifax stadium was small enough that a private group was able to start work on it without any extra funding from the city. A lot of the old proposals required tens or hundreds of millions in public funding.

The site it's being built on is great. It's a somewhat underused and run-down sports field in the middle of the city. The usual suspects complain about developing public land, yadda yadda, but if this is a success then this site will be enjoyed by a lot more people. The facility is going to be available for rent for a nominal fee when there are no official games.

Halifax also has a basketball team (Hurricanes, NBL) and a hockey team (Mooseheads, QMJHL). The QMJHL is a bit funny since some of the other teams are in small towns with tiny arenas with around 3,000 seats. Then again there is the Quebec City team which plays in a brand new 18,000 seat facility . An interesting side-effect of the existence of the league is that Maritimers are familiar with a bunch of smaller towns in Quebec, like Drummondville or Victoriaville, that they would probably not otherwise know about. The QMJHL has 18 teams and 6 are from the Maritimes.

We should keep in mind that IIRC this Halifax Stadium is only a temporary solution to ensure a CPL team has somewhere to play while a bigger stadium is built. It was stated by people within Soccer Canada that new teams will need 6000-7000 people per game, while this one will only seat 3000.

There was also interest in Moncton, where there's already a suitable (relatively new) stadium at UdeM and support from the city but no investors.

There has been professional basketball in the Maritimes for 26 years (before the Raptors) and CHL for even longer. The soccer team will be the 3rd sport to establish a professional team in the region.

That's pretty interesting, This is a good thing for not only soccer but the CFL I can't imagine a permanent Stadium being built without a CFL team being involved. It's definitely a step in the right direction for Canadian soccer though. One question I have is could this location house a 20,000 seat stadium in the future?

Well, who knows. If they build a permanent 7,500 seater for CPL, that would leave them with an easy to swallow cost but the size still wouldn't cut it for the CFL. Although I guess you could always make it expandable (as with Moncton's stadium) and use temp seats to bring it to a larger number in the 20,000 area. At least then you'd have the key infrastructure like locker rooms, control rooms, kitchens, etc. in the permanent grandstand.

Even though it is a temporary stadium the size would be more than adequate for a CSL franchise. Keep seating at a minimal level to ensure full houses and a great atmosphere. This is a better option than CSL teams in CFL stadiums. 5-7,000 people in a 20,000 seat lower bowl will look and feel awful.

IMO, the site for that temporary stadium appears much to small for a 25,000 seat stadium.

Indeed.

The Wanderers Grounds is an inspired choice for a temporary Canadian Premier League soccer stadium, and possibly even a permanent soccer stadium, but you couldn't wedge enough seats in there for a CFL team (where they would like to have 25-30,000 seats minimum).

The Moncton Stadium was easily expandable to over 20,000 seats for Touchdown Atlantic, and if they really wanted to spend the money, I betcha they might be able to get 30,000 seats on site. The Wanderers Grounds isn't even in the same league.

A Halifax CFL team would require an entirely new stadium, likely off the peninsula.......

It does look like a great location for an intimate stadium. Hopefully whenever the CSL gets off the ground, Halifax will embrace their soccer team like Saskatoon has embraced their lacrosse team.
