Pearl Post Office finally handed over to City of Portland
As local politicians and development professionals met Tuesday morning at the United State Postal Service parking lot USPS Parking Lot at Northwest 9th Avenue and Irving St, a letter carrier in shorts and cap walked on to the stage.
The mailman delivered a Priority Package to Tom Samra, the United States Postal Service Vice President of Facilities.
Samra extracted a large, cardboard key, which he presented to the Executive Director of the Portland Development Commission, Kimberly Branam.
Although it approved the deal in January 2016, the city now officially owns the property, which consists of 13.4 acres at the base of the Broadway Bridge.
The site has a retail post office but is mainly a sorting office and parking lot for mail trucks. As high-end mixed-use buildings have grown up around it, truck access has become harder. The building presents none of the street amenities that people in the area expect. Developers have long eyed the potential of what it the largest available parcel of land in the central city.
Since the Portland Development Commission's recent acquisition of the 11-acre USPS site, its members have been hard at work beginning to plan the Broadway Corridor with as much community input as possible.
Last week, the Portland Development Commission held a visioning workshop for the Broadway Corridor, a 24-acre site at the Broadway Bridgehead.
The Broadway Corridor framework plan envisions a vibrant, mixed-use, dense urban district integrated with multi-modal transportation. The site includes the area bounded by Northwest Ninth Avenue to Northwest Fifth Avenue, and from Northwest Glisan Street up to Northwest Lovejoy Street, including the PDC-owned Union Station and the Greyhound Terminal.
Kimberly Branam, executive director of the Portland Development Commission, said this has been a long time coming.
Hmmm, I was looking up Carbon12 on PATH Architecture's page and came across this building that was "on the boards". Looks like it would be on the Post Office site. Anybody have any insight?
Interesting. Freudian slip providing parking options for the event. No transit? :o) nitpicking, but we are a city. In NY they'd provide the subway line.
I agree, but the NYC comparison is untrue. New York had not added a new underground line to subway system since the 1930s, and finally opened the first section of the Second Avenue line earlier this year. Construction on that line started in the early 1970s and has started and stopped for 45 years--the first section finally opened this January.

I believe by "provide a subway line", they meant that in NYC a subway line would be listed on the event as the preferred public transit option. The event only listed parking, not transit options.

You are right, and now that you have pointed that out, Cab is also right that this is completely wack!
Does anyone know when the new post office at the airport will be completed - and when they will move operations out there?
It seems to be humming along with activity, but imagine it's got to be another year or so before the move happens?

We get it. You want taller, shinier buildings. You want them built faster and you don't understand why that's not happening. (despite numerous explanations)
