I know that. Just odd to me since they would piss off the long time Safeway shoppers (even if it is owned by Sobey's).

I imagine the mall would be willing to offer the lower price and differentiation in location. I'd see Sobey's closing first.

I agree. No one likes Sobey's. It's over priced, and even tho Safeway is over priced too, people have a connection in the Regina market with the Safeway brand since it's been around for so long.

Now that I think about it Sobey's has a large stake in the ownership of their site on Albert.

That said, I still think the mall is a better location.

Sobeys parent company simply destroyed the safeway brand and have been feeling the effects of lower same store sales all across the country in both stores since it has acquired it. Used to exclusively shop at safeway, i'm now a superstore/walmart guy. Mainly also because everything costs so much you have to find the best deal regardless of store, i do this almost exclusively now with all my purchases. Ex: Went to wine in spirits in harbour landing on the weekend to buy a 12 pck of twisted tees, they wanted 38.43$ and refused to give me a price break down on it. Same thing at gov owned LB in eastend 31.48$, ridiculous

I previously shopped at Sobeys (south Albert) and then migrated to Save on for a short time until the novelty wore off and the higher prices sank in. Now I am back to almost full time shopping at Sobey's with a once in a while trip to save on to get a few cuts of meat that I can't get at Sobey's.
Will likely try the new superstore for a bit.

There is no one store that is lowest price on everything with some items cheaper in each store - you just have to gauge if it is worth making two stops to save a buck. Not even superstore (or whatever the last loblaw store at golden mile was called) is lowest price on all items.

I have been to Walmart in harbour landing once or twice to get some groceries and was astonished at the cheap prices......but I couldn't get over the fact that I was at walmart and felt self conscious about the size of my ass the whole time I was there.

Now if Safeway closed at the Southland Mall and Cineplex knocked it down and built a new stadium seating style theatre complex and then the mall renovated the former Cineplex into new retail I wouldn't mind .

Yeah being seen with lower income Reginans is such a drag.

First time they have won the East in 34 years. It is a pretty big deal.

^Indeed. Nicely coming back after coming out nervous and flat to start. Down 3-0 after only 8 minutes and going down 4-2 in the second but still coming back. Lose the penalties and this wasn't even close.

That's how I was hoping it would play out, but the investment in recliners (which - for the record - don't recline... leg rest comes up, but the seat doesn't recline) makes clear it's not happening. But that's not really the model Cineplex has tended toward lately - they like free-standing operations, not ones attached to malls. I'm sure there's a way to accomplish that on the Southland property, but it would involve extensive redevelopment. Easier to just find a parcel of land in one of the big box developments & start fresh.

If they were going to redevelop an existing building, wouldn't Costco be a better bet?

I agree. The free-standing location is, on paper, the bigger liability of the two and would incurr the most expenses and would need the most sustained sales to keep it afloat. I could see the Safeway having lower sales but lower expenses being in a mall, creating a lower risk for the company of losses at that location. I guess it depends on what the terms of the lease were with the building owner of the Sobey's and what the exit clause looks like. If it's going to cost them millions to break the lease on the place then maybe I can see the Safeway going first.

Maybe the Sobey's can go back to being a Chrysler dealership?

I believe with Sobey's franchised locations it's Sobey's that owns the property and leases it to the franchisees.

According to Dream, the grocery store lease or sale is still conditional:

Not really. Sobey's spun off their property into a REIT which they have minority control of.

Sobey's doesn't directly own any of their locations in Regina/the RMs.

I've heard from multiple people we're getting one this year, but I've heard a time line closer to the fall.
