It's not that bad from the front, though a bit of a Frankenstein's monster of traditional and modern elements:



But this back, though:



They made no attempt to add soil, it's just shitty grass on rock. The trim on the bottom left corner of the house isn't even finished (the white vertical piece shouldn't just end like that). The deck has that random board sticking far out on the left. You can see the stones it's on. There's that odd half-step thing in the corner. Two thin, decorative strips of lattice? God, lattice looks like poverty even when used properly. Gren paint on one portion of the deks... Bizarre fake windows/plant things on the shed. And oversized columns on the right for... whatever reason. Presumably just to hold those FAKE EFFING FLOWERS. Dear God.

There are a lot of very, very poor design choices in that backyard (and the house too, look at how close the top floor windows are to the roof; the ceilings are either gabled which I absolutely hate, or the windows are abnormally high on the walls). I bet there's inadequate water-proofing where the deck ties into the house too, that thing is gonna rot away in 15 years.

But I think the thing that really kills it for me is the horrid attempt to tie in some Newfoundland charm with those yellow chairs. It doesn't work, at all, in your drab, grey back yard. Throw them away, immediately.

This backyard was designed by someone who read an online article about design once upon a time.

^ The grey house yard and decks; nothing there makes any sense, it's totally non functional and illogical, and this actually goes a long way towards ugliness, not to speak of being crude and unfinished, with no attractive details or finishes at all, in front of a background of large blank expanses of grey plastic siding. The chairs are Adirondack chairs (plastic?), found anywhere in Eastern N. America I guess, oh, and no landscaping at all doesn't help. The front has that asphalt walkway, yuk.

I think people just mistake crudeness for rustic charm.

Yes it should. That is the foundation you're looking at below it. Hard to tell in the picture but looks like it never had the parging done.

Oh I know but usually here there would be white trim as well all along the edge of the grey vinyl, separating it from the foundation. They did finish it with grey trim horizontally but just left that white piece there. It looks to me at least.

Corner trim with J molding running in to it. Pretty standard for vinyl siding really. You're probably just more used to wood siding and trim? It certainly doesn't seem out of place for what I'm used to seeing out here in Airdrie.

How has no one commented yet on the bizarre fabric shed thing growing out of the house where the basement walkout should be? What is it? And why is there no doorway into the house downstairs? Why is the bbq covered with that ugly beige cloak when it's sheltered by the stairs and it looks like it's summer? Why did they leave an empty plant pot with the dead stub of a tree in the photo at the bottom by the deck?

Asking logical questions like that in Nfld. will just make you crazy. LOL.

I've seen decks built not connected to anything, just out in the middle of nowhere, also attached to a house with no doors leading to them, while there are doors with no decks attached to them.

We'll need to do a "covered or uncovered" survey. To me the reason they HAVE covers is in order to keep the thing covered and clean.

I've never seen that weird door cover thing. It's too windy here for such a thing to be practical in most places. Maybe the back door is not installed?
