In what way has NorthStarsProject ever been right? All they keep saying is that the project is dead.
As a purchaser who has received the email confirming the go-ahead of the project, I don't get why anyone would think that forum user has been right... ever. They just keep saying the same thing over and over in different ways quoting this source and that source secret inside information, and trying to baffle us with bulls***, but never backing it up with any real truth. Reminds me of the old Weekly World News and their articles about 'BatBoy'. Please.

I think he was the same poster on the JetsOwner.com website that stated according to his inside source at True North following the purchase of the Atlanta Thrashers that there was a zero percent chance that the team would be named the Jets.

From SkyCity email:
-The team has been working on a construction schedule. Notice has been given to the St. Regis hotel operators to vacate in July to allow for demolition to start.

-We have been working closely with city staff for both the grants and permitting of the project

-We have begun discussing opportunities with anchor retail tenants and hope to be able to make some exciting announcements over the summer.

^ It's all meaningless until actual construction begins. As we have seen in Regina, demolition and digging a hole is no indication of anything.

Either are promises of cranes, but almost everyone seems excited again as well. I, am, less than excited.

Agreed, but wasn't there's some stipulation to do with the st Regis? I thought it was supposed to revert back to cdntreventure if construction hadn't begun by April 2017, which it hasn't.

I talked to some REAL PEOPLE today directly and indirectly involved with SkyCity and the sky is not falling. It is a large project that takes time in Winnipeg. I am not saying it is a slam dunk yet because they are still having issues finding an anchor tenant for the commercial and office portions of the project - this could effectively make or break it. I am told they are turning over all stones for this. TNS being local boys, has helped their cause immensely as well as being first out of the gate.

Either way, this project is apparently much better off having Edenshaw in the fold as they apparently have their shit in order and are making a serious positive impact for the validity of this going forward.

I have no idea officially if this will a pan out in the end, but fall is the targeted start date if they can get the commercial and office tenant situation figured out. Issues with SkyCity are the same issues that face any mega-project in the City of Winnipeg - not Fortress as some have said.

No one said building the tallest building in the city wouldn't be a challenge. I don't work for or have any affiliation with this project other than I would love to see it succeed no mater who the developer is.

Exactly.

Plus, they've only now begun to talk to anchor tenants?

The St Regis stipulation is promising though. If they do demo it, that will be a positive sign I think.

Interesting. Thanks for this post, Biff. Informative and gives a peek at the situation even if it's just a small peek.

So there is legitimate hope, but it's not a home run yet.

The problem with NorthStars, is his talking-from-my-own-ass manner of posting. Some of the concerns he raises are legitimate. How he postures about their validity and his own credibility is laughable, however.

SkyCity making claims in an email also means little. Any developer in charge of a speculative project would claim similar things until the dying day.

I'm sure they've begun talking with anchors a while back, but perhaps this is the first time they have significant traction.

They got a 1 year extension I believe. Thought it was in the news recently. Maybe I'm dreaming though.

Anyways, Haven't we all said that we'll just wait it out. Whatever happens will happen. NO sense in stressing over some internet troll who seems to provide little back-up other than "ITS OVER!"

Well they are going to have much harder time of finding an anchor now then they would have 2 years ago. With TNS and 300 Main in the squeeze. I don't see anyone lining up.

What may make sense though would to forget the retail part of it amd just make the podium a hotel. We need more rooms in the city. Especially downtown. I'm not sure why this hasn't been looked at?

Podium a Hotel
Tower is Condos

i think shoppers drug mart should relocate there from winnipeg square.. or possibly have 2 or 3 smaller chains take up the space maybe a restaurant and a 7-11 convenient store, our dt needs a 7-11

i have no idea why that area should have trouble finding a tenant

that area is booming going to be one of the busiest areas in the city with all the new residents, offices, event goers, this really confounds me

maybe the lease price is to high

I think they are selling the commercial units, not leasing them, so that could be why its more difficult to find tenants.

to put this into perspective. The city and Fortress have until May 15th to close any deal or would have to wait until September.

This will not happen of course.

So I was told by a city official they believe Fortress will be announcing a new condo development with their new partner and another partner for the spring '18 and will be giving unit holders an opportunity to purchase.

I was also told that 2 lawsuits are going to be filed against Fortress and the claim is to be filed in Winnipeg.

I can confirm what was earlier reported that Fortress in fact lost $$ in past projects and they have been told flat out to stay away from lots of architects and finance companies. Nobody wants to deal with them.

A large issue is the silence from various sides and was informed that shortly we should be hearing more truth and why Sky City will not happen.
"To put this in perspective", this is my first post on the forum (even though I've lurked for the longest time as a guest) and I already have more credibility than NorthStarsProject. Any small morsel of a source would go a long ways towards countering the negative credibility that you're establishing by constantly posting heresay and unsubstantiated yet "factual" perspectives.
Like many on here, I have no skin in this game and am simply interested in keeping up with the goings on in town. I have zero insider knowledge and don't profess to know if this project is going ahead or not.

Anyways, now that I've busted my posting cherry here, maybe I'll get more involved in discussions.

Winnipeg developers planning to build a 45-storey, $200 million condominium/commercial tower – to be called SkyCity Centre – have been given a 12-month extension to finalize their plans.

Angela Mathieson, president and CEO of CentreVenture Development Corp., said Fortress Real Developments Inc. and Edenshaw Developments Ltd. have until April 30, 2018, to demolish the St. Regis Hotel on Smith Street and begin constructing the new complex.

Bank financing required the developers to pre-sell 60 per cent of the units, and thus far, only 50 per cent have been sold.

“[Buying a pre-sale] is a newer phenomenon in Winnipeg and there is some reluctance for people to buy them. It’s taking some time. They are marketing them like crazy but they have a ways to go,” Mathieson said.
