PHLX's latest home above Philly

After graduating from La Salle, Kevin Kennedy did what ambitious Philadelphians had done for 200 years: He got a job with a firm that bought and sold securities the old-fashioned way — trading face-to-face, with quick-fire "open outcry" price negotiations, on the floor of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange.

But location, tech, and Philly hustle kept the PHLX going. Last Thursday, Kennedy stood before a mural of PHLX's historic homes — the London Coffee House (and previous slave market), the Old Customs House, and the underground Market Street trading floor — to mark the opening of the new Nasdaq PHLX Trading Floor and the tech offices that the giant Nasdaq group, which bought the PLHX 10 years ago, has moved from New York and Center City to three floors of the new FMC tower overlooking the Schuylkill. Kennedy is Nasdaq's senior vice president and head of equity options.

Nasdaq has 150 employees here, and plans to double that to 300 by 2019, said Tom Wittman, a PHLX veteran-turned-Nasdaq executive vice president and global head of equities.

The floor is also a workplace for more than 80 employees of Susquehanna Investments and other local, Chicago, and Wall Street firms that still see Philadelphia as an attractive place to trade. Many more trades move electronically through PHLX and other Nasdaq market systems based here.

I wonder if they could do that amount of work and upgrades while parts of the hotel were still open. Maybe do one side at a time.
Who knows if it would be cost effective, increase their income to a point where the increases would cover the cost of the upgrades.

I'd think not. And the GSK building is getting a total gut job, not just a new facade. I think they are putting $40-$50million into this property.

Seems impossible to run the hotel and do this level of work. It would have to be sold, closed and renovated for something like this to happen.

While we were cleaning the streets, planting trees, improving our buildings, forging relationships to strengthen neighborhoods (and meet nice people), participating in town watch patrols, attending endless numbers of zoning meetings, court sessions, and city council meetings, raising our children to be academically capable in underfunded schools, becoming involved in those underfunded schools to improve them, we apparently were, all along, old-hatted negadelphians that just need to die.

These are the folks: the negadelphians I was referring to--who seem to take pleasure watching Action News from their Delco or South Jersey homes when they hear about 20 shootings in 48 hours//the zombielands-open air drug markets of the Badlands. As if to say, "see...that nasty Philadelphia, so glad we left, it's scary there!" There's definitely an older, white suburban negative attitude towards the City that lasts to this day. Benjamin’s Desk coworking community signs on at Studebaker building

The historic Studebaker building on North Broad has found another tenant: Benjamin’s Desk has signed a lease to transform more than 17,000 square feet of space in the historic building into a coworking community.

The site will be called “Divine Works,” a nod to its neighbor the Divine Lorraine, which is located just a few blocks up North Broad and is also owned by developer Eric Blumenfeld.

In 2016, TrustHouse Services Group bought the Starr’s catering group. It will continue leasing space in the Studebaker building, now with Benjamin’s Desk.

Philadelphia, Camden beat San Francisco in year-over-year job growth

For the first time since December 2010, Philadelphia beat San Francisco in employment growth and, for the first time in 10 years, Camden, N.J., bested that California bastion of technology in job growth.

In fact, Camden has achieved that status for the last three consecutive months, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Camden area has been steadily increasing job growth over the past year, said Kara L. Markley of U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“This is looking really good for our area,” Markley said.

In Camden, jobs in trade, transportation and utilities were the sectors leading the growth and can be attributed to an influx of construction activity in the city because of the state investing more than $2 billion in tax credits and other financial incentives through its Grow N.J. program. In Philadelphia, jobs in financial and professional services along with the education and health care industries, and leisure and hospitality showed the most growth and is a reflection of the city’s diverse economy.

1. When do we think we're going to get an official announcement about Tower 1 of Schuykill Yards / rumored to be for Spark Therapeutics?

2. When do we think we'll see the next Spec Office Building announced/built at the Navy Yard? It's been a while and I have to think another one is coming soon.
