Something that doesn't belong in a shopping mall parking lot. Vancouver's major performing arts theatre...and a restaurant half-way between A&W and Earls. I don't get it, it seems like an extremely low-rent option.

I'd put Browns a notch above Earls and certainly not in the league as A&W. But even an A&W would be better then the current situation.

Here's the Development Permit render of the proposed hotel next to the Exchange, on West Pender. Image is from site sign, published on Changing City blog. Ignore the strange circular addition to the side of the building - it was raining!

The city put out a request for proposals a little while ago. In it was a revenue sharing agreement. In addition to base rent, the city takes a cut of sales which increases as a percentage as the restaurant's revenues do.

I agree that it is better than nothing, but you would think that they would use a restaurant that might cater to people spending $100-$200 on tickets to live theatre. It seems like the clientele for Browns and the clientele for the QE do not overlap, like, at all.

The QE hosts a ton of events/acts/shows that come through town. They aren't all people in monocles attending the opera.

If Browns opens with the appropriate style interior, they'll be fine.

The JJ's at VCC used to get a lot of the before theatre crowd in the restaurant.

They are going to dump a lot of money into it because the current space is a mess. Then they're going to hope QE has enough events (and ignore Chambar/Glowbal nearby). Then ignore the fact they have little street presence.

Thanks for the image. What I'd like to know is what is that 100 storey building on the left? lol

I know, I know, it's just some artistic license being taken. But wouldn't it be nice to see something that size in Vancouver?

Haha saw that as well. Looks like the Willis(Sears) Tower minus the antennae.

both the tower proposals on the last page were hideous. The Toronto formula of dumb boxes jazzed up by "balcony play" has migrated here. There's always an ideal spot for the balcony relative to the unit layout within, so half the units are screwed.

The Charleston only looks ok because of its shape + curtainwall, rather than any of the other finishes.

What if they configured the units inside to be different on each floor?

I was wondering if anyone had a date on when the "unzipped wall" designed by Bjarke Ingels was slated to be reassembled in the plaza on Thurlow Street and West Cordova Street?

In a few years, it still might go into some other cities before being installed here.

Well on Westbank's announcement

The timeframe for the structure's permanent move is also still under discussion, but Gillespie predicted that it would be within the next couple of years.
