Here's the CBC's take on this morning's presentation:

Moncton envisions more people living downtown in future

An interesting observation.

Actually, there is an opportunity here (with a reconstructed street grid south of Main Street) to turn every street in this precinct into low speed shared pedestrian/vehicular thoroughfares just like Downing Street is envisaged to be.

None of the existing streets between Main & Assumption really have high traffic volumes. They are all short connector streets serving only local businesses and parking lots. Most vehicular traffic in the downtown stays on Main or Assumption, or travels on the grid north of Main Street. As such, we are gifted with a great opportunity here to be creative in what to do with this section of the downtown core.

Imagine all these streets being purposefully narrow and acting mostly as pedestrian conduits, but also allowing local vehicular traffic, both for residents and also for passage for service and delivery vehicles. These streets could still have some on-street parking, just like it currently exists for Downing Street. Now imagine each of these streets properly landscaped and lined with medium/high density town homes and apartment buildings with street level retail & restaurants. It could have an ambiance like a modern day version of old town Quebec City............

Of course, such a plan would displace all of the surface parking as it currently exists south of Main Street, but this would be a good thing really. There is no question however that all of these parking spots (and more) would have to be replaced. This is Moncton after all, and people still would want to have the option of being able to drive downtown to soak up the atmosphere and to go to events at the Capitol Theatre and at the events centre. As such, any redevelopment plan like this would have to occur hand in hand with the creation of several multilevel downtown parking garages. This is a mandatory precondition for this type of radical revisioning of this precinct.

Yeah, I don't know what's up with that. I don't think this vehicular loop would accomplish much (aside from occupying space), and, as far as I'm concerned, this is where I would like to see the main downtown parking structure to be built since it is also close to the events centre, and easily accessible to the events centre via a tunnel under the CN mainline.

I recopied the image from pierre's post just so people can refresh themselves on the concept.

I would prefer to see the resurrection of the rail track from Downing street to the planned under CN rail tunnel across from the New Events Centre.

Add one of these old fashion trolleys with a cool train whistle, then you have an awesome nostalgic way to transport people across downtown to the Events Centre. Who doesn't like to hear the sound of a train whistle?

While your idea sounds neat I think it would be a terrible way to spend money and do absolutely nothing for our downtown. Adding more streets to create a more grid like structure south of main street would be an excellent investment. The large swaths of land are unattractive to developers and make it difficult for people/cars to move around conveniently.

Well Westmorland can be a busy street because of Service New Brunswick. Why that is located there and not somewhere easily accessible, I have no idea.

There is no reason for Service NB to be there. It could easily be relocated......

According to the T&T, that old three storey brick building on the NW corner of Main & King Streets is being totally renovated for a microbrewery and a yoga studio.

This is a definite step up from it's previous life as a tattoo parlour........

I was looking at the area this morning where the road is supposed to go (if they actually go, and add it), and the only buildings that would have to be removed are the Ioob Lounge Ltd, and the Denis The Office Experts Showroom. It would cut some parking for some buildings but not sure they would have to be demolished Just add a parking garage in the Downtown plans to replace the parking that would be lost from this road expansion plan. For me it seems like a no brainer.

The road appears to go through the grassy area between Heritage and ALC. I think Denis might be able to stay, but yeah, I doubt there'd be much room for Ioob pub. It's pretty tight between it and the market.

This is very exciting! Moncton really could use a micro brewery downtown. I know pumphouse is there, but this addition is welcomed, I have lots of friends who enjoy going to different breweries and they always complained that Moncton fell behind the rest of the pack.

"Brew Pup"? I hope that isn't an official render.

Honestly though, if this works out and a local brewer takes up residence in this building, that will make 4 brewers (Tide and Boar, Pumphouse, Gahan, and this new one) all within a couple of blocks of each other.

I'm all for the Moncton Brewery district.

I would say this is going to work out, they wouldn't be doing this if they didn't have people already lined up.. I would say the microbrewery probably owns the building along with the yoga studio.

1 just off main, and it faces both Alma, and Church Street.

The developer is Steven Gallant (Galco Investments), so it is a serious proposal.

According to the T&T, he is in "negotiations" with a couple of microbreweries and a yoga studio for the building, so nothing is cast in stone yet. He also expects the building to be a "digital billboard platform" (note the big Downtown Moncton sign on the render).

He intends this building to be the "eastern gateway" into the downtown core, and expects rapid development of surrounding parcels of land.

It will be interesting if the Harper Building begins construction this year. This is only one block down from this redevelopment project. If both the Harper Building and this building take off, then yes, this could be the beginning of a renaissance for the eastern gateway to the city.

Of note is the fact that there has been some activity on the Harper Building lot this week, although I think the excavators have only been removing the residual overburden left from the sewer work done last year. Still, the overburden would have to be removed before anything else happens........

Current status of the building - interior demolition work is ongoing in preparation for the renovations.

That is the only above ground one but there are a few underground garages as well...courthouse, Blue Cross and 25 Dominion come to mind downtown...several others are scattered around town like the Moncton hospital and many large apartment buildings...the parking for Horizon Place in Dieppe will be 2 or 3 levels I think.
