I am not sure it was ever seriously considered or is still on the table but at one point there was a rumour about a plan to build a tower in behind the Spring Garden Road courthouse.

I like the lowrise areas. The parts I don't like are the ones with empty lots. The worst concentration is around Sackville to Salter below Granville.

Some of the podium columns have been uncovered.

I was worried about this one having too much concrete showing, but now that the exterior finishing details are being completed, it looks very impressive.

I can't lie.. I think this is taking place up near the top of my list as one of my favourite buildings downtown. It's all coming together so nicely.. I was really worried about the sheer vastness of the amount of balcony there was but it blends in quite well. With the finishing touches on the design now coming to a reality, kind of makes me think it should be in Toronto or something.

I would agree. It is looking a lot better as the finishing touches are added but I would argue that it would look better if the curved section was either missing or clad in something a bit nicer.

I haven't seen this building in person, but based on the pictures the curved section looks ok to me. I think from some perspectives it makes the Maple look even taller than it really is.

Check out the latest photos in the skyline thread. Makes the maple and Roy look extremely squat.

I think the feel at street level is far more important than the skyline. Mississauga has some very tall buildings but it isn't a city that is enjoyable to walk around in (the buildings are just too spread out). However, Mississauga is a bedroom city to Toronto so it might not be a fair comparison.

For now, I think that it is better that Halifax has many projects with heights from 6 to 22 stories, than to have fewer projects with heights up to 40 stories. A dense, walkable urban core should be the goal in my opinion, which can eventually expand towards the north end once the Cogswell Interchange is removed and redeveloped.

A few from this morning. I took a pic of the columns that have been uncovered but the shot didn't work for some reason. I'm hoping there is still some work to do on them because there is no brick and it looks like some sort of black clapboard.

I wonder if there's any plan to finish the bottom sides of the balconies, because frankly the unfinished concrete looks terrible from the street.

No photos of this one but I biked by this today and noticed they are pouring the Hollis Street sidewalk. The street level looked great.

I wonder if there is a good paint for concrete that won't start to peel after a few years. The bottom of the balconies certainly needs something.

Thanks Jonovision. The curved section looks good to me, however maybe your photos make it look better than it really is?

I feel like the curved section is incongruous because it has so much conspicuous metal framing and spandrel glass, whereas the balcony section is simpler and more elegant looking. It almost looks like they are pieces from two different buildings. I got this impression in person too, but it is subjective.

I find the little box near ground level on the eastern facade to be kind of ugly too.

Overall I still think it's a nice new building, and a big improvement for the city. It breaks up all the empty lots in that area. Hopefully they will all fill in over the next few years (though I am not holding my breath when it comes to the United Gulf lot...). Sackville Street just needs two more buildings now to be fully built up, whereas it was half empty only a few years ago.

Looks like something that would have been built in Toronto around 1964. That's not necessarily a bad thing.

Rental unit availability and floor plans are now posted on the Maple website - http://apartments.southwest.ca/apartments/ns/halifax/maple-2/floorplans.aspx. Prices start at $1,311 for a one bedroom unit.

According to my quick count, there are only 54 units still available. They say that occupancy will start in May.

I'm shocked at how high the rental rates are for Halifax, the one beds are close to what we pay in Vancouver for a condo-style newer high-rise apartment.

Same with me. I thought prices were high in Hamilton/Oakvile/Burlington area, but still a person can get a nice bachelor or 1 bedroom apartment in the $1100 vicinity. Halifax area developers must be doing well if they can get these rental rates.

How do Halifax-area renters manage to pay these rates? It must cut into their food and entertainment budgets. Perhaps they do it by not owning cars?

Surprisingly enough, the Maple is almost sold out. No wonder developers are putting up these apartment buildings at the rents they are charging.

PS: Some of the apartment units in the Maple are short term rentals for out-of-towners, I wonder if that is part of the reason for the high rental rates on some units?
