I noticed behind the QT on Indian School and 3rd Avenue there's a reinforced concrete structure going up, trying to figure out what it is and I found some building permits for a 7 story assisted living building called Solterra Midtown. Nice to see some added density in the area but it's too bad that area continues to trend downward with all the subsidized housing, senior housing, and weekly rate hotels.

Actually the area is getting better. A huge apartment complex is going up at the SE corner at the old Mercedes dealership, The Stewart apartments at Osborn and 3rd Ave., the newly opened Natural Grocers store that replaced Fresh and Easy and the new senior place you just mentioned. Not to mention the revitalized Melrose area starting across the street, the new apartments and retail at the Bashas site at 7th & Osborn. Don't see a decline, I see investment and progress.

I agree, the area is coming up I think!

Does anyone have any updates on the Bashas site project? It would be really cool to get that corner fixed up.

Additionally, anyone know what's going on at 423 W Osborn? They tore down a bunch of duplexes and are working on something

IDK, but quite a bit going on along Osborn between the 7's. Gadzooks Enchiladas and Taco Guild a few years ago and the {insert name} Title building currently either being demo or refurbish, plus what you mentioned.

Per the draft minutes of the March meeting of the Encanto VPC:

Quote:
Katherine Coles reported that a Sprouts grocery store is likely to occupy the space being vacated by Bashas’ at the southwest corner of 7th Avenue and Osborn Road, and that the planned residential component of that development is slated for a future phase.

I went by the Museum Apartments today. This turned out a lot better than I was expecting given who the developer is. I'd love it if there was a tower on this massive lot, but overall it's pretty good.

Do we know just how south the development will go? Does it stop at the Blue Fin Restaurant or is this getting knocked down? I'm assuming this development will extend onto the old mid-century building in the back that's about to be demo'ed?

Macayo's closed at the beginning of March, but I have not seen any movement at their new location (the Toyo place across the street still has people working in it) or movement for Alta Central. I am not sure what the holdup is, but you would think Macayo's would have a applied for an extension until their new location was at least under way?

Maybe their not in a hurry. They're wrapping up things at a business that was open since the 1940s and the new restaurant is going to be much smaller with a very different menu. Hopefully they're taking their time with design and up the quality of their menu. It was pretty bland.

This is a chain with a boatload of locations. You are suggesting that they are going to do something different at the new one? Seems unlikely.

A new Macayo's concept called Woody's will open across the street in a building that was previously Toyowest Automotive Inc. The planned 5,000-square-foot restaurant will feature a more chef-driven menu.

Yup! Renderings are completely different too. Personally very excited for these two projects. Lose a hideous building and replace with more residents and some density, restore a neat building with a valley favorite restaurant. Win-win.
