Possible stupid question time... Why do post secondary buildings always have so much open/wasted space... i never really considered it, but thinking back to U of A days, a lot of the buildings had huge atriums and open spaces... Especially in the newer buildings... Is it actually functional? I understand allowing large hallways for students to transit between classes, but this open air multi level space just seems silly...

Atriums help with natural lighting and air circulation, and I remember the province having a preference or requirement LEED Silver and it helps on that end.

These areas are typically used as gathering places for students and staff. Designing the space to be open and bright creates a welcoming space to congregate.

In the above photo specifically all I see is "look at us, look at our atrium, isn't it fancy, take us seriously, we're so modern..." Just seems wasteful. Students will be spending the ten minutes between classes walking here... Possibly not pictured here, there might be a seating area on the main level, but that doesn't seem like it would be too inviting having all the escalators above it. The new buildings with open atria create a different feeling for the users.

Any University of Alberta student will tell you they dislike the Arts, Tory, Bio Sci, Mechanical Engineering Buildings because they feel so unfriendly.

In contrast, the newer Engineering buildings (NREF and ETLC) were quick favourites of the students regardless of discipline. Now the newer ones, ECHA and CCIS have further expanded on that concept.

Perhaps space is wasted, but the open design makes you feel 'connected and welcomed'. It's a very brief feeling but I don't doubt it plays a role in the subconscious.

Those people don't remember the Arts building before it was painstakingly renovated... I do. Or do you mean the Fine Arts building? I wasn't so great either.

^^^ You can't really compare a campus building to a shopping mall - ones an apple the other an orange. Your typical mall owner thinks that any space that isn't crammed with kiosks selling iPhone covers, sunglasses, crappy remote control toys and Dead Sea 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 that generate lease revenue in their pockets is a waste of space. A university will consider a large atrium full of students socializing, resting or cramming for exams is highly beneficial to the campus culture and an attraction for prospective students.

That's why I was curious if there's an actual concrete reason for the large atriums and if not how many scholarships/how long a tuition freeze could that atrium buy?
