In the above photo specifically all I see is "look at us, look at our atrium, isn't it fancy, take us seriously, we're so modern..." Just seems wasteful. Students will be spending the ten minutes between classes walking here... Possibly not pictured here, there might be a seating area on the main level, but that doesn't seem like it would be too inviting having all the escalators above it. I was also just curious because it seems like a lot of malls are closing in atrium spaces to have more income generating square footage. I realize a university isn't concerned with that but it still just seems a little wasteful. As some one mentioned there is potential operational benefits to it though. Fine.
