Wow, I've never seen such a deliberate ass-kiss to seek approval.

the inside atrium ish space should have something like they have done inside the sport check store, it looks good there with the ribbon of video and screens.

Is doing something like that easier to get approval since it's on the inside instead of the outside?

That screen placement looks extremely awkward. They should keep them starting from the top but extend down as far as shown there or to the bottom. Similar to the twin vertical screens recently installed on Eaton Centre in Toronto.

What would be better altogether is a single curved screen around that corner, but that's asking too much.

Still an improvement. Will be nice to have upgraded resolution and quality from that of 10 years ago.

i am sure that these are the max that they can push the city for screen size. an area like this should be like Times Square in NYC. or at least that general area such as Granville. even our "entertainment" district, the stadiums, is dead at night, and in the day.

Yes you are right! And what's annoying is that they won't even bother proposing that because we all know the city would never allow it.

Creative solution to the homeless people that camped out in the retail alcoves every night at the 819 (Robson & Hamilton).

The morning after the concrete spheres were installed a homeless person was spotted sleeping directly in the doorway. (Tina Lovgreen/CBC)
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/concrete-balls-homeless-squatting-1.4003840

They could have also used planters, but that would require constant watering and could collect garbage.
A permanent solution would be to renovate to make the windows flush or to install roll shutters.
The problem is particularly bad at this building.

It's getting more evenly terrible throughout the city now, one of the benefits of living in this part of east Van was that there were very few homeless around here as they didn't earn as much as they would panhandling Downtown or the west side, but in the past year there has been a noticeable increase of people sleeping in doorways and all over on Main St, Fraser and east Broadway.

WRT the Bay Parkade site.

Unfortunately, the view cones limit the height to about 300ft, if I recall correctly (think Main Post Office massing which is view cone restricted to about 222ft (under the same view cone 9.1) except at the corner).

It pays to know the Trumps
The success of Trump Tower Vancouver has quickly made developer Joo Kim Tiah a major player in the city’s development world

Last updated: Friday, Mar. 03, 2017 4:44PM EST

...

The deal has made Mr. Tiah a major player in Vancouver’s development community within a relatively short time. With the Trump project completed, he’s setting his sights on another major downtown project. Holborn Group owns almost two city blocks bordered by Dunsmuir, Seymour, Georgia and Richards. One of the buildings is 500 Dunsmuir, better known as Dunsmuir House, which was social housing run by the Salvation Army. Prior to that, it was Dunsmuir Hotel, built around 1913. Mr. Tiah says he’d like to preserve the heritage aspect of the building and transform it into something “cool.”

He proposes a “massive” mixed-use project that will include retail, office, market condos and rentals.

“It’s going to be huge,” he says, laughing. “It’s going to be the greatest project in Vancouver. It’s an opportunity to really ‘place-make.’”

Although the city says it hasn’t received a formal enquiry from the developer about the site, Mr. Tiah says city staff has given him the kind of feedback a developer wants to hear.

“The city said we could go to a 10-floor space ratio,” he said, referring to the building’s floor area. So we doubled the FSR. Planning told us if we respect the view cone, we could go as high as we wanted … it’s such a big piece of land, we are going to try to maximize the potential of the site. We are not going to limit ourselves to the zoning at this point of time. [We will] do all the studies, present to the city what we feel would be the best use of this land. You really don’t have any more big pieces of land downtown.”

The north east corner of Davie and Bidwell seems to be getting ready to be demolished. The businesses are either closed or are soon to close.

The City can come up with a new bylaw to prevent people from sleeping in front of private properties or businesses, and encourage the homeless to sleep in the shelters. Don't owners have the right to access their premises at all times? Tax payers can't even camp for free in National Parks and Forest Reserves for Pete's sake.

Sad, agreed it's getting worse, but only in Vancouver.

Maybe we should have a new thread that highlights issues on homelessness here at SkycraperPage, with as many picture updates of the problem as possible, and send the link to City Hall.

The majority of these guys who make a point of sleeping on Robson leave tons of garbage everywhere on a daily basis. The least that they could do is leave the area in a tidy manner. Its not like they are busy going to work the next day.it is unsightly. Note to Gregor: the more you try and build below market affordable housing in the City, the more and more they will come from other provinces. It is a never ending cycle.

It's totally out of control. They hide behind bleating about the Charter and their right to be a public nuisance. Meanwhile if you or I tried to do the same on a residential street in Shaughnessy or Kerrisdale the cops would be on us so fast your head would spin. It would be great to have a Premier somewhere with the balls to invoke the Notwithstanding clause on loitering/homeless encampments.

Yeah and this is why I never ever give any money to people sleeping on streets.

Fun fact: Vancouver police do a sweep of many areas each morning for people sleeping in doorways.
