S. Charles Lee did the gorgeous Hollywood Regency remodel of the Max Factor building, combining an old furniture warehouse and a garage. The shorter, garage portion is now a Mel's Drive-in.

In my opinion the marquee doesn't seem all that practical. You wouldn't be able to read it until you were right in front of the theater.

There's a parking lot in front of the cinema building rather than a street. The marquee would've been roughly where Yogurtland is today. It was probably placed to catch the attention of traffic on Main Street, which wasn't lined with trees when the cinema opened.

They're wind chimes. Yes, it's a frightening thought, and I'm going to go lie down just thinking about it; but they're wind chimes. When I go to Fashion Island, I park near there. The upside is that they hardly ever make any sound (at least in my experience).

"Made of bronze, the installation takes up an entire panel wall of the building and are considered a sculpture created by mural artist Tom Van Sant. They aren't his only piece of artwork but are certainly one of the most enjoyable because they make sounds. The chimes were installed in September 1967, and set a Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest wind chime."

This is the other building featured in the Julius Shulman photoset that I posted yesterday. It's still "Job 6269: Phelps and Morris, miscellaneous projects (Long Beach, Calif.), 1984". The sign on the side says "The Belmont" and "A Racquetball and Athletic Club".

These look like the racquetball courts.

A reverse view from near the "Sundeck" sign.

There was also a gym ...

... and a small pool.

The Belmont Athletic Club is still in business at 4918 E 2nd Street, Long Beach - just a stone's throw from yesterday's Gibraltar Savings location. The front has been opened up with large windows on the second floor. They've kept the Art Deco typeface.

Perhaps at the west end of the Art Deco building here...

across from which in the vintage view is reflected this building (apparently then in Moderne diguise)...

By 1942, Hindin's had moved downtown to 317 W. 8th, which would have been where this building is now, one with a special name (at least up until May 2011)...

Yep. That's the theater in which I saw the Charlton Heston Ben-Hur when I was but a tyke. That show was so overpowering to this li'l kid, what with the chariot race and all, that I came within a whisker of fainting as we walked out and had to be supported in our walk back to the car. (Nowadays, I think that Ben-Hur is bloated, and infinitely prefer the earlier one with Ramon Novarro et al.)
