well since it's 5 lanes wide at the widest point I tend to agree with you that it looks like there preparing for Costco to move into the Harisville area. That is unless there is another large retailer we know nothing about, or they have full on plans that this area will be developed into a full on retail park. Either way I wonder if this will light the flame desperately needed under the local developers butts, and see this area turn from open spaces, and wooded areas to residential, and commercial spaces...

An elongated roundabout; very nice design. Similar to this one planned for Vancouver, minus the fly-over ramp. Regardless if Costco moves there or not, I think the area needs it, that spot is probably the worst traffic bottleneck in the city right now. I'm still hoping that Costco doesn't move out there though.

he provincial and federal governments will spend $13.7 million to improve the congested interchange at Route 15 and Harrisville Boulevard in Moncton.

The project will widen the Harrisville Boulevard overpass to four lanes from three. Each end of the bridge will feature semi-roundabouts, eliminating all left turns, one of the major traffic choke points on the stretch of road. All traffic lights at the overpass will be removed as well, eliminating the other reason for traffic grinding to a halt on that section of road.

The funding was announced at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

"We understand that residents want infrastructure that is safe for travellers, helps support economic development and is reliable," said provincial Treasury Board president Roger Melanson. "We are proud to be be making an investment that does all of these things. "

Harrisville Boulevard is a 3.5-kilometre two-lane stretch of road that starts at Frenette Avenue in the Caledonia Industrial Park in the north and crosses Shediac Road before turning into Dieppe Boulevard as it crosses over Veterans Memorial Highway, or Route 15.

The area is a traffic nightmare at certain times of the day and hampers traffic to and from both the Dieppe and Caledonia industrial parks, the Greater Moncton Romeo LeBlanc International Airport in Dieppe and a nascent retail area along Harrisville Boulevard in Moncton.

Once the project is complete, "We'll see more retail, I suspect, in this area," Melanson said.

Much of Harrisville Boulevard near Route 15 has long been zoned for big-box retailers. A major announcement for a new retail tenant has been rumoured for the past two years for that road. Asked specifically if the province has been talking with a potential big-box tenant for Harrisville Boulevard, Melanson said he doesn't typically comment on rumours.

He said he can only assume that when government sets the stage for private development, which he described as its role, that the private sector will take advantage of the opportunity that such investments present.

The overpass's new design is known as a "dog bone" because that's exactly what it looks like: the straight overpass forming the middle of the bone; the partial roundabouts forming the rounded ends.

Melanson describes it as a "different" design that will take some getting use to for many drivers who will benefit from not having to stop at multiple red lights when going to and from the area and not having to make any left turns. For skittish drivers, however, they'll have to contend with a bridge as well as on- and off-ramps with partial roundabouts at each ends.

It's the first "dog-bone" design to be used in New Brunswick.

The work will also include a new exit for eastbound traffic on Route 15 directly on to Industrielle Street in Dieppe. The new exit will remove some of the vehicles which now exit Route 15 at hectic Harrisville Boulevard. The new exit will accommodate vehicles going to the older section of the Dieppe Industrial Park via Industrielle Street, or to nearby Champlain Street near Bonte Foods at an intersection that was recently upgraded, and beyond that to the large residential area on the south side of Champlain Street.

The province will pay $8 million of the project while the federal government will chip in another $5.7 million.

Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe MP Ginette Petitpas Taylor said the project will create jobs and boost the economy.

It will "help grow the middle class, promote sustainable development and increase public safety," she said, while making access easier to residential, industrial and shopping areas, as well as the airport.

On one hand I'm excited because this is a very neat design and much needed regardless of Costco, plus I work in the area and use this stretch of road almost daily so it will be personally a huge benefit to my commute...on the other hand I tend to agree that Costco announcement for Harrisville is likely coming soon.

I can't see the govmt putting this much effort into it unless significant investment was waiting in the wings.

What a traffic nightmare this will be during construction. On a positive note LOTS of road construction jobs in eastern/southern NB in the coming summers.

Indeed. This image shows what the city of Dieppe wants in terms of a connector from Industrielle to Highway 15.



In the T&T article, they mention an eastbound exit off of 15 connecting to Industrielle, but they don't specifically mention an overpass or a corresponding westbound on ramp leading back to Highway 15. It would be nice to know exactly what their intentions are here.

If they really wanted to, they could go as far as this for a Rue Industrielle connection to Highway 15:



Also, still no word on a full interchange for the airport exit.

There will be no westbound exit on to 15 from Industrial St., at least not for the foreseeable future.

Unless things have changed, Dieppe has always favoured having the main entrance/exit to the airport from Hwy 2 on to Aviation Avenue. Now that Aviation Ave is being extended up to the TCH, this is likely to happen in the next 10 or 20 years.
