Agreed. Halifax's skyline "doesn't have" to become a singular precept. It can evolve and grow according to its own distinct policies and geography.
And also, Halifax's recent boom has completely altered the skyline already. It looks bulky and vibrant. In many ways it has followed Montreal's path: a good mix old old, concrete apartment slabs, 60's modernism, po-mo offices and 21st century glass condos.
Agree. Not every city needs to go tall. Halifax is a very vibrant little city with a ton of charm and character. The added density is making it even better. If it keeps developing as it is downtown will eventually spread north to the McDonald bridge. They could always go tall there if they really wanted to.

An attractive skyline is nice but it's pretty far down the list of priorities.
For the most part I think I prefer lowrise and midrise development. This gives a city a bigger bang for the buck. There isn't enough demand in Halifax to fill the downtown area with 30 storey buildings, nor would that necessarily be desirable. Halifax has an extensive inner city that could use a lot of infill over a large area; it is not like some newer cities that have a tiny old town core with highrises and then a huge belt of suburbia.
I'm curious to see how much busier downtown Halifax will be when these buildings start to fill up businesses and residents. The area has been slowly improving for years but most of the largest projects are still not occupied yet and they actually have a bit of a negative effect on their neighbours while they are under construction.
There is another whole crop of new buildings coming that are in the site prep stage and aren't visible in the photos. For example, if you look closely at the second photo you can see a construction site along the waterfront (Queen's Marque). There's also a big pit next to the Paramount and Martello that is going to have two highrises. The changes are going to keep coming for a while.
You can have both which is even better. Also Halifax will be getting a new tower that will break up the table top effect. A skyline should have one or two peaks to break it up a bit imo.
