Not Shoppes at Fairwinds, or Sundance at Findley Creek?

They should have added some HMU (Heavy Metal Umlaut):

Ugh, no. Whenever I see superfluous accents in marketing, it makes me shudder. It just highlights the fact that it's not authentic. Have you every wondered how Häagen Dazs would actually sound if you were to pronounce it? It sounds awful.

At least 'Kanaal' is an actual Dutch word. The problem is that it has nothing to do with the Chaudière Islands.

I dunno - I don't think of '🞵🞵🞵🞵' every time I see 'Rideau Canal'.
Kanaal is a bit pretentious imo, but not dirty.

Can you imagine how bad-🞵🞵🞵 Ottawa would be as Öttawå?

.
And I am pretty sure it doesn't even mean anything. And is not even someone's name. It's completely made up.

It does. It just means "canal" or "channel".

Kanaal is dutch an the Windmill group is headed by a family of Dutch origin, Westeinde, so I'm good with the name.

I get how people might at first glance consider it pretentious, but it is authentic-to the builders who are of dutch origin, and what the name stands for which is what the building is alongside-a channel.

Its ok to not like it, but its not inauthentic.

It's not inauthentic, but its link to the wider 'themes' of the site (water, industry, first nations) is somewhat thin. It's not completely unrelated, but it's thin.

Nothing can be worse than the Trebla building on Albert

Let that name soak for a bit...

(hint, read it backwards)

Talk about a lack of effort

You're correct. It's meant to be Danish, but not only is it nonsense, but it's unpronounceable nonsense. And not only that, it's unpronounceable nonsense which uses an diacritic which doesn't even exist in the language it aims to mimic.

Well it has been phenomenally successful and is now fairly widespread even in Europe. Pretty good for a product made in New Jersey.

Kanal is actually also a decent name. I agree with criticism of Wateridge, but they have been smart to use the Rockcliffe name even though there is a good bit of (generally very cheap) real estate between the development and Rockcliffe. There sales seem to have gone very well and they are selling houses for twice what a house goes for in the surrounding area so must be doing something right.

I "got" that the first time I laid eyes on that building umpty-zillion years ago!

Could be so much worse: The Trebla at Lebreton Bluffs or some such nonsense.

A thirty-foot toilet to commemorate Ottawa's proud history of indoor plumbing?

The digging has started... time for another land claim:

Quote:
Algonquin grandmothers push back against Windmill development
Group opposes development on Chaudiere, Albert and Victoria.

By: Ryan Tumilty, Metro
Published on Mon Apr 10 2017

A group of Algonquin grandmothers wants to put a stop to any development on Chaudiere, Albert and Victoria Islands, because they argue the land should never have been offered for development.

The Algonquin Grandmothers of Pikwakanagan filed a statement of claim in court last month seeking to stop any development on the lands, which they view as a sacred territory.

Windmill development plans a mixed-use community on the islands and has worked with several other Algonquin groups to get support for the redevelopment.

Greg Sarazin, a spokesperson for the grandmothers, said they want the development stopped.

He said the group is stepping in because they believe the chief and council for the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan don’t have the community’s support.

“In recent years, it became apparent to the people that the chief and the council of Pikwakanagan had been going in the wrong direction,” he said.

He said the grandmothers view the islands as a sacred place and they don’t want to see them developed. He said in their society preserving important pieces of culture have always fallen to grandmothers.

“Traditionally, the grandmothers of the nation were the ones who kept the nation going, by protecting the culture and the history of the nation.”

Sarazin said Indigenous communities have always viewed the islands as special and important and to see them turned into a community of condominiums would be terrible.

“It’s always been a sacred site, because of the spiritual nature,” he said. “It’s a place where the Aboriginal nations, the Algonquin and others when they were invited, came to pray and to carry out ceremonies.”

The claim has not yet been heard and the allegations have not been proven in court.
