70-90 parking spaces is a lot. I have my doubt's that this will end up downtown. I agree that it was wrong to exclude downtown for the original RFP but for 20-22,000 sq ft on main or potentially 2 floors + the parking seems destined for the burbs.

Maybe they won't go into 360 Main, but what about some of the buildings on the northern or western edges of downtown? (LGA defined downtown fairly broadly, as I recall...)

The Canada Post building on McDermot is an example of a low slung building with a fair bit of parking that went up downtown. Perhaps there is something else like it that could work for LGA... can't hurt to consider it.

Our blocks may not look good but at least they're not falling apart.

^^ agreed ours were better built the ones in moscow were thrown together as fast as possible and artical states they were only ment to last 25 yrs with plans for replacement soon after witch never happend and thus gehtos were created from this decay sometimes a can of paint can make a difference

I'm not sure what blocks we're talking about in Winnipeg. Just Manitoba Housing regular apartment type places? I think most places, both public and private, are of fairly similar construction. We definitely don't have large swaths of public housing projects like Moscow, or larger American cities do.

Also i see there is a new Condo Development going up on Lag, in between Grassie and CPT.

According to a news release on Feb 8/15 probably not as long as the current PC Govt is in power


Three other projects that were announced by the NDP have not been approved by the Treasury Board:

A new facility for the Pan Am Clinic in Winnipeg.
A Concordia wellness centre.
An international centre for dignity and palliative care.

That's the old greenhouse lands. The existing strip mall at Grassie and Lag will be extended northwards as well.

And yes, Pallister cancelled the wellness thing.

coming from one of the most aging wards around town.. we'll see how this plays out! this is certainly going against save-now/save later budgets........... it will only go one way... bad.

Believe the sign that is still up says coming in Spring 2016 for what was to be the Concordia Health and Fitness Centre. Seems to me there was a lot of private money pledged to that project. Why it never got started when it was supposed to was strange and a longtime before the PC's got into power!

Pretty sure it was 2017 on the sign. My grandma used to be in Concordia Village and we noticed the sign back in 2014, I think it was. Could be wrong though. I drive by their all the time getting to/from Lag and Tcona.

Oh, I'm just anti brutalist architecture. Looks good in dystopian future movies, but I don't want to walk by it everyday. Makes me think of Soviet Russia.

Soviet housing blocks aren't brutalist and if there are any brutalist housing blocks at all in Winnipeg, I'm drawing a blank. You could make a case for Executive House and Grosvenor House I suppose. And they are two of the finest residential buildings in the city.

It is very upsetting to have one's design/creation demolished, especially because of circumstances not of one's control. This is one of those designs that came together very quickly over an intense weekend and was a "just right" solution for the then proposed Peace Tower. We were hired to do only the design, so it was out of our control as to how it was built, and so the design was modified to meet budget constraints (it was originally to be 150' tall instead of 120'). The reflecting pool was never built and it was to be finished with Tyndal stone, not concrete. (Although even in concrete I would not have classified this as a Brutalist design.) This was my original design sketch for the tower showing the design as intended. Even with the changes it was very gratifying to realize that it had become such an iconic symbol of the Peace Gardens. I hope the money will be found to build its replacement.
