True. It's pretty cheap for an older lobby/unit and a lot of buildings have been refreshed over the last few years.

That brown and beige is atrocious. Inside, the brown and beige is slightly more modern. The parquet in the green is hilariously reminding me of growing up when my parents put parquet flooring in all the bedrooms. It was pretty fancy back in the day.

But you know, both are pretty passable for living conditions really. Recalling some of the shitholes I've lived in over the years makes these look glamourous on the inside at least.

So about two weeks ago I took a walk (nearly 6 km to get where I wanted to go) and re-found this beautifully urban and impressive piece of suburbia, a Lifetime Fitness Centre that......is in a pretty Bufu Egypt area:

Alright, I never even heard of these guys, but this is their first location, built in 2014. They literally have a fake beach for the members to enjoy. Here's an article that turned 3 years old 9 days ago:

As much as this sounds like a great gym, the location just sounds bad for anyone EXCEPT a driver, which seems to reinforce a dated car-dominated culture for an already incredibly car-bound suburb that is Mississauga.

Ah, Waterloo Row. Fredericton's famous riverside promenade. Site of many stately waterfront estates. Mostly untouched, the city's wealthy have maintained their homes at this prestigious address, hallmarks of Victorian architecture.

When some land clears up at the southern end of this majestic street, it is essential to make sure the new houses follow the style of the past, or at least don't do anything too offensive. This new development will be highly visible to travelers on the Princess Margaret Bridge and must be inviting and indicative of our beautiful city.

Or we could just build some shitty McMansions. Like, particularly shitty McMansions.

Those pictured houses are beautiful!!! The streetview ones not so much. The mere fact you have those amazing old mansions is a blessing to the city though. Everywhere has ugly suburbia. Not everywhere has houses like that.

Yep. At first glance I thought that stacked part was the garage with a bonus room on top. Nope. They devoted the most space for the 3 car garage then built that nonsensical addition to cram God knows what useless shit into instead.

The funniest part is that this is an expensive area of "exclusive" McMansions. Can't buy taste though.

At least there are other windows on the front of that house. There are bungalows in this city which only have a fake window above the garage.

The ugliest McMansion I've ever seen in St. John's is at the edge of the 1940s core. This is the point at which large masion estates gave way to farmland. One of the nicer examples (since turned into an inn) is directly across the street:

But the McMansion, modern infill, is just... hideous and incorporates no traditional Newfoundland influences. It could easily be anywhere in architecture, colour, finishings... brutal.

It reminds me of the new "upper middle class" areas in the East End, generally for people who get moderately rich running fast food restaurant chains or newly-minted provincial politicians.

I'm not sure the Queen Anne (the pink Waterford Manor) has any traditional influences for that matter either. In those days no one would have thought of that. But that's not always the point.

The house in the last picture is far worse though.

This reminds me of McKenzie Towne. It gets praise as a walkable community in the middle of the deep 'burbs, but it's really only quasi-walkable (the street layouts aren't particularly ped-friendly, and everyone I know there tends to drive everywhere anyway).

And more than that, the architecture is a very fakey version of a small town kind of environment. These storefronts on "High Street" all have fake second storeys with fake windows. I don't know if it's a zoning thing (prohibition of mixed-use) or not, but it really undercuts the ostensible urbanism of the whole place. And it looks incredibly cheap, generally.
