IDK why folks think this is stalled. Its not. Just like 1 MW is not stalled. Although it will seem like it because the base/foundation/support structure will take a year in total before we start to see it rise. If you want to see a very slow tower, actually, one that has been u/c since the first atoms collided, check out Tribeca Royale.

Likewise for 111 W 57th. Steinway, is on another level though. I'm more excited for that, and 9 Dekalb, than CPT. IDK if its a bad thing, but CPT just doesn't impress on the level that those two do. SHoP is life!

Yes. To the right, we can also see a smaller crane, but thats for the high rise portion of 220 CPS. To the left of 220 CPS, you can see the CPT crane.

Because 111 W. 57th and 9 Dekalb are masterpieces! As is Tower Verre. While this is entirely unremarkable with no noteworthy or distinctive features besides height. I'm totally fine with it, but it's rise is not exciting to me at all.

MY guess is that this will be a very shiny building, contrasting with 220 CPS, 432 Park, and even One57. I've come to terms with the "crown", still unhappy that the tallest in Midtown won't have a spire of sorts, but it will be what it will be.

It's the quiet giant waiting to rise...

If I may, I'd like to re-introduce myself as the SSP forumer formerly known as JayPro.
It does my heart good to finally contribute to the myriaddiscussions about new construction in the Apple.

As for this tower on the rise (finally), a few observations:

As for this spire or no spire argument, I've concluded that for where it is, the addition really isn't needed. Its simplistic contours in juxtaposition between One57 and 220CPS easily catch the eye without drawing too much attention to itself, which IMO adding the spire *would* do.
(Now if it were part of the MidtownEast rezoning, the spire would be fine....maybe if instead on top of the building it were added to one of the corners like IIRC Moscow's Federation complex's spire in the middle, which I think was scrapped(?) ).

Moving right along, the overall facade is moderately complex without leaving viewers scratching their heads. Lastly, the height of the cantilever from street level (How tall?) is impressive to an almost daunting level, giving the tower a further sense of awesome presence.

What we have here is the tallest of NYC's new crop of giants striking an incredibly difficult, yet IMO seamless balance between profound subtlety and sheer verticality.

I say top-out by Memorial Day at the latest.

Using that reasoning, how many people do you count on 220 CPS? Is that moving too slow as well? I think you're assuming that there is a full workforce on these towers every day, which there isn't. There are some sites that have an active workforce on the weekends, but not many.

As far as how slow the progress is here, it's slow, but it's not like we're waiting for the most dynamic tower to get built. If this were the only game in town, I might be more concerned with the pace, due to the excitement. But there is simply way too much going on in New York to get concerned about it. Barnett could put this on ice for a couple of years, and I wouldn't be bothered. This just happens to be the tallest of the new supertall towers being built in New York. It's hardly the most exciting. It will dominate from sheer size of course.

Is that not what the tallest towers are supposed to do? Is not the Empire State such an icon because it was the tallest, the spire topping a vast skyline of other skyscrapers, screaming "look at me"?

This tower will be the tallest in Midtown, with or without the spire. It will stand above the Empire State, One Vanderbilt, 111 W. 57th, 30 Hudson, the Chrysler, 53W53, BofA, all towers that have an apex with variations on the New York spire/crown that the skyline is known for, all standing above row after row of boxes (people don't generally think of buildings like the GE, Met Life, Chase, as skyline defining towers).

The New York skyline is seen from a number of angles, most often not the ones we generally think of. This building will matter more than others because it will be the most visible. As is currently planned, the apex doesn't do this city or it's skyline justice. But it will be what it will be. It will be thrown into the mix same as the others. It just should have been a better representation of a skyline defining tower in New York.
