I don't think Denver is a better place location wise. Salt Lake City has everything much closer. Denver has more urban amenities, but if we could get the government agencies to act quicker, then this could get done.

If the state and county don't act fast, they could lose a huge convention and money maker.
Everyone can blame who they want, but the primary reason they've given is that "Utah doesn't respect the industry's culture and values." This is not unlike the NBA pulling this year's All-star game out of Charlotte NC and moving it to New Orleans in response to North Carolina's laws discriminating against LGBT people, costing NC, Charlotte and the entertainment and hospitality industries there millions.
While I'm sure the Convention Center Hotel shit-show is a factor, this is less a dissatisfaction with Salt Lake and/or the Salt Palace and more a protest against the political climate that is currently hanging over this country like an inversion. In this tribune article, they make that pretty clear.

Agreed, the letter goes out of its way to thank Salt Lake City and County. This is about our Governor and legislature and their disregard for public lands and the environment.

So I haven't posted in a long time, but its expected that West High School will be rebuilt within the next 10 years. The retrofitting in the 1990's didn't do much for West - the halls are completely packed, classrooms are too small, everything is dimly lit, and nothing feels structurally safe, and SLCSD has been looking into rebuilding West within the next 10 years. West has actually been slated for a rebuild for the last 30 or so years, but in classic Utah fashion, its more fun to divert funds to white people. Work would likely begin in 2020, but the administrators at West are in the primary stages of finding funding, etc. I don't have any more information beyond this.

Does anyone know how Trump's whole infrastructure plan is coming about? As someone... on the other side of the political spectrum, his infrastructure plan was the one thing I was okay-ish with. Have we not heard about it because he's too embroiled within other controversy? Or is he just too busy ruining other stuff?

Let's put things in perspective here...shall we?

Quote:
The large amount of public land in Utah, Edwards said, is one reason why the state is often in the crosshairs of criticism. Two-thirds of Utah is federally owned land, compared to one-third of Colorado.

"There's just less interface with these public-lands issues in that state," Edwards said. "It's just a different environment there in terms of how much of the land comes under federal jurisdiction and, hence, the possibility for questions about its appropriate use and management."

I've really never said much about the federal land issue in Utah, but I'm going to say what I can and probably say no more. I'm on a phone, there will be issues.

This quote from Orlando is only one reason I do not want the federal government to control as much as they do.

I've said in the past I grew up not on the farm but around it. That means I worked with these tough hard working people. Where a pray in church always included water. Some of my friends (college educated) in high school continued to farm and ranch today and they have series issues with the federal government.

One issue is land use. In this the BLM is aweful and I mean incompetent aweful. Most ranchers practice migration feeding. This isn't that new but it is to use the land like it was being used before fences. This inturn helps fertilize the land and spread seeds and what not. There are pictures of BLM land completely Barron and dust bowl like next to private ranch land that is lush and full of grasses who practice this. . BLM clams environment protection no hurds but in fact they are hurting the land. Here is a video on the subject https://www.ted.com/talks/allan_savory_how_to_green_the_world_s_deserts_and_reverse_climate_change

2nd Issue. Sensitive wildlife. This is where the state of Utah absolutely does better then the Feds. We have all hurd of sage grouse. The fact that bird is on the threaten list is due to the Feds management of the land. The lose of habitat is because of the desertification of the lands the Feds manage. Utahs lands that are managed by the state are some of the best habitat for these birds. BLM wants to take control of these lands because the birds are on it and its threatened.

Wild horses. Not sure how to address this. Let's just say people are stupid. The number of wild horses are so high the the BLM actual does not know how many there really are. They are not native animals! They take more then they put back and are another reason the sage grouse are on decline. I get this info from a BLM employee I went to college with. The main reason their numbers are so high (30-40,000) is because there is public out cry to round them up, kill them if not adopted or send them to other countries for slaughter. (People are stupid) There is a federal law (stupid) forbidding slaughter of horses.

How to fight fires! This is one issue the SUWA assholes bring up. I've spoken to one of their former lawyers, SUWA ... you are assholes! that's all I will say about them to protect this person.

Right, fires, Utah has done some incredible things in this area, the state pioneered range restoration after fires and some of this has been adopted by the BLM. The state has also been working on restoring native plants to state lands which have been shown to slow down wild fires and prevent in some cases.. Once again you will see state land with the native plants and then BLM land with that evil Cheat grass. And if you want to look up the largest fire in state history, all on BLM land and all because of cheat grass started by lightning. Oh and cheat grass, another reason the sage grouse are on decline.

I should stop but there is so much more crap. Bears Ears, man did they screw up. Aside from the politics, the native Americans were being used in all of this ( I asked a Navajo). If they wanted to protect this land for Native Americans they would of made it a national historical site or heritage, not a national monument. Also the area that has the native history in it is a tenth the size (still big). I have been to these places several times and I'm not excited now to have to pay. Also this thing took quite a bit of school trust land away for no exchange. The Feds say they will but they still haven't exchanged land in dinosaurs monument 30+ years ago. Oh and now the land is more restrictive to natives then before.

Grand staircase. So another problem with these monuments is, monuments were never supposed to be this big. This one is way to big. I know the whole coal this is an issue but really to draw a big circl around land and turn 90 percent of a county into federal land and say mine is wrong on every level. This is land that can not generate money for anything local and again we lost trust land.

I do believe in managing the land, ATVs can do a lot of harm when you go off trail, so educate, but to shut all land down is wrong.

We whine about not funding our schools but really when 68 percent of your possible taxable land is locked up for no revenue then you get underfunded schools.

I'm not saying we should open the flood gate but nobody is truly talking to each other, other then through threats and legal action and that's the main problem.

Another thing if those CEOs truly believe what they said, get the hell out of the state that let you become what you did you ungrateful assholes. Go to California where they will tax you to kingdom come.

The Outdoor show will be replaced, it's nice, but we will be fine without it.

I think that as Scott suggested, this is more politically motivated than a CCH issue. Interesting though, I wonder how in step the leadership of OR is with the majority of the rank and file? I think Middle America, which makes up the majority of OR membership would be asking for more local control vs. Federal intervention. As AllOutOfBubbleGum pointed out, The Feds donot usually operate as effectively as local leadership, when it comes to land management issues. It would seem to me that if Utah were to go up against OR, and compete directly, it would win out with the majority of the attending membership. If the venue really did change in the future, I would even suggest the State and or local entrepreneurs forming it's own registered organization and booking the convention at roughly the same time. Look at what locals have done with Comic Con! Speaking of Comic Con, I spent the day working with Stan Lee recently. What a force, and at his age too!

More on OR and a quote from Mayor McAdams on the CCH.

http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/major-outdoor-retailer-event-consider-moving-out-utah

"There's more a lot more support for public lands even though there's some high-profile controversy right now," said Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams said.

He said negotiations between county officials and a real estate developer to build a convention hotel that would provide the city with much-needed lodging are headed in the right direction, but not done yet. If they strike a deal, the developer could get at least $75 million in tax credits.

I think it's the rank and file who are pushing the OR Organizers to move the convention, not the other way round. Example: Patagonia has dropped out of OR and told them they will not return until the show is held elsewhere.

Losing it will be a huge blow.

Mayor McAdams today during state of the county:

This is a cut and paste from his Twitter, that's why its so curt.

"Avg convention goer spends $1k while here. Moving 4wrd w/ convention hotel, making good progress - Details coming soon. #slco #sotc #utpol"

I don't think there's any reason for people to lose their shit over this. The only announcement made here is they are going to accept bids from other cities. IIRC, they've done this before in years past.

While them leaving SLC could be the real deal, and I hope it isn't, it could simply be a negotiating tactic.

This is true.

With the CCH progressing, I could see that 1 part of the negotiations is to have additional exhibit space within the Salt Palace. It could be one of those deals where work has to begin on the expansion within 2 years of the CCH being completed or similar.

This has been #2 on their list of needs for a while and those in the tents are getting more concerned as they are seen less than those within the center.

The open space and land issues are a bit more complicated than in previous years.

I don't know the current polling but from previous years, 75% of Attendees and 66% of Exhibitors want the show to stay in SLC for many numerous reasons. I do know that OR polls both Attendees and Exhibitors each year.

I do think OR would like some kind of gesture towards open space and I also think they want a timeline for an expansion of the Salt Palace.

So the 2 aren't that far apart (State and OR) it is just getting there that may be tricky as each group would need to come away as being seen as the victor.

Where do you get your info? I was attending west high when they closed it down for the renevation. The renevations wasn't ever meant to optimize space or update much. It was to preform extensive structural enhancement to preserve and pretect the building, because they had no intention of tearing it down.

I could see them doing a major renovation on the inside of main building and rebuilding everything else... I doubt the main building is going anywhere though. I guess they could build a new school across the street and then tear down all the expansions. I don't want to see that building go though... even if west high doesn't use it... perhaps that building could even be renovated and become a Jr. high.... not sure where the sports Feild would go though.
