I really can't see that Toyota development happening. It's an undesirable location from a tenant standpoint. I went by there on the silver line this afternoon and I really can't see anyone wanting to move there unless it were much cheaper for some reason.

The Toyota development is far from pedestrian activity as well.

Lots of news today overshadowed this, but this is a great thing for Broadway. Especially the block between 5th and 6th, which is still rough around the edges.

It's funny how we've seen proposed designs from names like Herzog & de Meuron and Bjarke Ingels for projects in the Arts District (a neighborhood that's largely light-industrial and devoid of vibrancy/activity), while the more happening and centrally located South Park is bearing most of the brunt in terms of mediocre/ugly development. The truth is stranger than fiction, eh?

Makes perfect sense. ARTS District.

It's just not a good design. Too many ideas competing against one another. Feels more like a preliminary sketch that hasn't been fully worked out and refined. This doesn't seem like a Gensler design, which tends to have a bit more restrained and are not so wildly post-modern as this. It's something to look at but it's beneath Gensler to fall back on the LA cliche of going for sheer spectacle over all other things considered. Boxes on boxes is the trend now I guess.

Such a shame we're losing these old buildings for some generic —. Why demolish when there's vacant land all around?

I agree--the old 4-13 story buildings should be preserved & refurbished. Maybe some could be turned into "Frankentowers" with new portions grafted on. They really have character. Plenty of vacant lots still to build new towers. Olive, Hill, Broadway, Spring & Main Sts. have some of the greatest concentrations of early 20th century buildings outside of NYC & Chicago. Love those great old theaters. Tearing down Bunker Hill was a big mistake.

Seriously. This building is pretty interesting. The Skid Row Housing Trust can easily get more bang for their buck if they just sold this property and develop housing somewhere else in LA. There are a ton of places in LA which will certainly be cheaper and still service a good amount of people.

^That one (built 1924) is definitely more architecturally significant than the other (built 1913), but they are both great little pieces of LA's historic urban fabric. I hate hearing about the possibility of losing these.

MarshallKnight of SSC mocked this up. Thought I'd share it here.

Original by clarsonx

Removed Federal Courthouse from the front page as it is now completed. Added that...thing to the proposed section. Took some photos of the ongoing projects. Circa is rapidly approaching the 30 floor mark. Oceanwide is slowly rising but the pace is picking up now that they've passed the Mall levels. CIM is a 3rd of the way there at the 11th floor. Onni's 50 story is almost at the tower portion. Expect that bad boy to shoot up and be incredibly prominent by the end of the year. Broadway Palace's 10 story is almost topped out. The franken towers are...slowly rising. They're good infil.

The only reason I'm so convinced the 15 story structure Shy wants to build on Broadway is happening is because his redevelopment nextdoor has made preparations in anticipation for it's construction such as sealing off the windows which would be blocked by it.

^ Thanks. Do you (or anyone here) know what's happening with Apex II? I thought the site was being prepped for construction several months ago.

It's well into construction.

I didn't grab any photos though.

Some recent photos of LASHP from its Facebook page. Looks like it'll be another few months before it's open to the public.

Are there any streetscaping plans for DTLAs major arteries such as Broadway, Spring, and Main?
Broadway, in particular, should get a major transformation that harkens back to its former elegance (especially with all the renovations ongoing).
I'm aware of the plans for Fig.
