While true, if you wait 5 more years it'll be the 2nd tallest in that picture with a possible a 3rd of similar height just outside that frame to the right.

Yeah, the Holts proposal could be 3 towers to close to equal size as One Bloor and One Bloor West which will start in a couple months will be 50 meters taller.

What are all those buildings in the QC shot? I know there's the hotel & the parliament building in the back, but what about all the buildings in the foreground?

Are those all condos/apartments with retail at street level?

I don't think you can see the parliament building in the shot.

The stuff that you see at the bottom is the lower town (Basse-Ville), so it's actually quite a bit below the part of the old city where the Château Frontenac(castle hotel) and the Édifice Price (tallest building on the right) are located.

The large building at the left is le Séminaire de Québec, one of the most magnificent building on the continent.

L'Hôtel du Parlement doesn't appear here, it's located on the right of this frame. Another interesting building is the old City Hall with its green roof, right below L'Édifice Price.

Edmonton seems to have the same 2 faced quality as Calgary does in that this angle the towers look a lot slimmer than from directly across the valley.

Nice progress made around the arena. And by the looks of it there's plenty more room for progress with the abundance of surface lots and some pretty crappy lowrise structures. This sector will be huge in a couple of decades I'm sure!

All true. Moreover, at the present time there is already a 200 m + tower just to the right of the frame. In any photo or view that includes more of the Bloor Yonge cluster than the posted shot, 1 Bloor E certainly looks tall but not, I think, out of proportion.

Edit; I've changed my post a bit. I mistook the direction from which the photo was taken.

I totally agree in principle. However, Yonge and Bloor has been rightly so identified for taller towers and this is just the first to be built. You really couldn't have pick poorer example.

^Regardless of the height, I find that toronto tower simply hideous. It's prominence enhances its ugliness. I've seen some pretty bad towers go up in TO lately, but this one is quite awful. Shame, because TO also builds some remarkable condo towers, i guess there must be a balance?

Surely when it was built (I'm guessing 1850's-1880's), it must have been among the tallest buildings anywhere in this country.

Does anybody know when the seminare was built? I measured the height on GE and it is 53m tall from top of the spire to bottom. And over 90m above the level of the river down below. Surely when it was built (I'm guessing 1850's-1880's), it must have been among the tallest buildings anywhere in this country.

1855 for the most monumental of the buildings. The complex has buildings way older than that though.

I guess it goes along with how bizarre everything else has been lately, but this is the first I've heard such backlash about 1 Bloor East. It's one of the nicest towers to go up during the boom IMO. That picture is horrible though.

It just looks like a generic glass shoe-box with an ugly hat on top. I really don't like it.

On my last sojourn to TO a few weeks ago there was a lot of really interesting architecture I found scattered all around the city. The type of ambitious and ballsy architecture that we seldom see in Montreal. But for the most part I found the city's stock of new skyscrapers to be at best quite forgettable. At worst remarkably ugly/kitshy. Of course this is my opinion. I just don't think that height + glass = nice.

LOL, too funny, especially from somebody in the city of bagels. 1 Bloor isn't even complete and it's great looking. I bet you like the HABS Tower.
