With that $98M figure, the Province of Quebec is funding $160M for the same projects. So, maybe the better question is, where is the Province of BC on these initiatives? They've already shown they won't budge a penny more on transit, after the Federal government upped their funding from 33% to 50%. Perhaps your anger is misguided. If you have any more links on SIF funding announcements, I'd love to see them. Decisions were supposed to be made in 2016 but that's the only one I could find.

I got the implication that the Trudeau didn't care about the west of Canada in general because they were less likely to vote for him (west is less liberal in general)?

They need to employ government workers a bit longer until the project actually goes ahead.

I feel by 2020, there will be shovels in the ground for this extension.
They might just go 180 and build the Burnaby Mountain Gondola and Interurban Commuter Rail with the money instead if neither can go through. There was a quite a bit of debt accumulated left over from the Canada Line, so we have some time to decide regardless.

BTW, is there the possibility of making this less painful by cut and covering the street 1 block south of broadway than Broadway itself?

I believe that was one of the plans. That would be a hell of a lot better though, assuming the NIMBYs STFU and BTFO.

It also would be far less disruptive to businesses on Broadway which is the major complaint . Think of the few years of pain and loss of businesses during construction akin to Cambie corridor.

Public funding was $450m from the federal government (29% of public funding), $435m from BC (28%), $300m from the Vancouver Airport Authority (19%), $334m from TransLink (21.5%), and $29m from the City of Vancouver (2%), a total of $1.548b in public funding. If you take the VAA funding out, the feds kicked in 36% of the remaining public funding.

They gave less proportionally because there was another source of public funding, which doesn't normally happen.

Is anyone going to the consultation event tonight? I'll hopefully be there near the end.

The plans are for

a) TBM tunnels
b) under Broadway

All other options have been set aside.

the only portions of Broadway that need to be 'cut & cover' construction are the blocks where the stations will be built.

That is such good news; that the plans are concretized. My only regret is that it is only going to Arbutus. Although that's a fairly decent stretch, the last leg to UBC will be far far off, IMO.

I would guess that shovels in the ground for that leg will likely be 10 years after this opens. This initial leg will not make the B line any less needed.

Why is cut-and-cover under 10th off the table?

Kind of concerned about the inevitable delays and cost overruns associated with the TBM; especially after what we've seen with Big Bertha and Alice. I know they did soil sampling but there's many portions of Broadway that have been filled (there used to be many creeks circa 1910).

No. There is no way in the world they'll just up and build a completely planless Interurban commuter rail through the valley out of nowhere. I know a lot of people talk like that train is going to be easy as hell by just using the old ROW for it, but that ROW is among the busiest rail in the country thanks to freight.

That's just it! These halfway measures are better than nothing, but they really amount to rather little, in the global picture. You are right.
The Broadway B Line will be as crowded as ever, and we'll be stuck with a half-done job that the apologists will defend ad nauseum, while West Broadway continues to choke to death.

I think even just going to Arbutus is going to be a massive improvement.

The remaining bus ride from Arbutus to UBC, while still crowded, will be much shorter than the current full route, and the most congested part of the trip (both traffic on the road and overcrowding in the bus) is the eastern half of the route which will be replaced by a faster, roomier subway that doesn't have to sit in traffic.

I ride the eastern half of the B-Line route a few times a month (rarely ever go all the way to UBC) and I can definitely say that the extension will make it way more convenient for getting around that corridor for me.

My guess is the extension to UBC will be announced as soon as the university ponies up a sizable contribution to projec ($500 M to $1B)

Why would UBC provide money? They're a public institution with a mandate that has nothing to do with providing transit.

Especially transit that reduces the demand for on-campus housing...

Perhaps because by contributing say $300M towards the line, it would guarntee the line does all the way to UBC. They would increase the value of the UBC endowment lands by several times that amount, it would spur development and pay back that investment via leaseholding new development at higher rates which would pay back the investment wiithin a decade not to mention making the university itself more attractive to both students and faculty. I'm actually surprised the university isn't making that move, perhaps they are sitting back and hoping to get it for free.

There's already a lot of transit going to UBC. The Broadway/UBC line would just increase capacity. It's the same thing as adding more buses to existing routes or adding more B-Line routes.
