I wouldn't be surprised if they did outsource the steel to China, but I was hoping for some numbers in the article. How close to competitive could local steel be? Being 6 miles from the construction site would certainly have its advantages.

PennDOT Wants Pittsburgh to be 'Proving Ground' For Autonomous Vehicles

I mean, it kind of already is. Crossing the street coming back from lunch a few weeks ago myself and two co-workers were targeted by a T-800... errr, an Uber Volvo XC90.

The vehicle came to an intersection (4 way stop) right as we got to it to cross. It sat at the stop sign for what seemed like an inordinate amount of time so we started crossing. As soon as we were halfway across, it started coming right for us, resulting in the Uber researchers having to intervene. (Thankfully.)

I'm sure the autonomy will only get better, but it's a little disconcerting as a pedestrian to understand that these are basically 2 ton science experiments roaming around. Makes me wonder how well they deal with the city's growing biking contingent.

There was a story on NPR a week or two ago talking about how, eventually, there will pedestrians who take advantage of autonomous vehicles by running out in front of them knowing full well that they are designed to stop and allow them to pass. Eventually other drivers will do the same.

I'm not sure I understand why that's a problem. Well, the pedestrians anyway. By the time pedestrian culture changes enough that people walk into moving traffic, human drivers will presumably be gone from the road.

This talk of prison closings and reuse has reminded me of how fascinated I have always been with abandoned properties. I've been to Centralia, toured Eastern State and walked through the Sideling Hill Tunnel as part of the abandoned section of the PA Turnpike near Breezewood.

I wasn't living near Pittsburgh when Dixmont State Hospital was in use, but the history of this (now demolished) place is quite interesting. I would have loved to walk the grounds and explore the old buildings before they disappeared in 2006.

Wow Dixmont looks amazing, I wish it was still around to tour as I was way too young to make the trek there to see it back then myself. I have gone out to Chester County twice to tour the Pennhurst complex and Dixmont actually looks a lot like the Pennhurst complex. How well worth is a trip to Centralia? I have known about it for years but I'm hoping to finally have the time this year to take some trips to see places like Centralia and the abandoned part of the PA Turnpike.

I've had the same thought for years. I've never quite pulled the trigger because it seems like there isn't much to see in Centralia that would really make it worth the drive. Super interesting though.

Centralia sucks, there's nothing left. There's way more awesome abandoned places all over western PA. I've mapped out every single abandoned place in PA, WV and eastern Ohio, it's taken 4 years. There's around 50 abandoned railroad tunnels within an hour or so radius of Pittsburgh. There's the abandoned Lincoln Way neighborhood in Clairton. There's tons of abandoned stuff in Mckeesports, abandoned mines along the Mon, abandoned DAR women's home in North Braddock. Weirton Steel is epic, the abandoned East Broad Top Railroad is incredible, etc etc. Centralia is about the lamest abandoned place around.

If you're interested I have an entire gallery of abandoned places around here you can check out. There's so much amazing stuff to see that's way closer than Centralia.

In addition to your photography business you should print abandoned places map brochures and sell them for a few bucks and possibly do paid guided tours too of some locations that are safe and legal to look around. More $$ for you.
I don't know of anyone else who has more knowledge of the tri-state decay locations than you.

I'd love to do that but almost every single abandoned spot is technically illegal to go to and most are on private property so I can't really publish anything that promotes people visiting places they have to trespass to get to.
