Of course Trump Vancouver would look like this

by Mcminsen

Such tacky signage. As if the letters on the granite plinth aren't big enough.

I liked this aerial on the Free Press website. It looks like it was taken in the summer. That's the pit for True North Square along the lower edge. West Exchange District in the upper right corner. Portage and Main is outside the frame to the right.

Great shots all around. Question for the Peggers. Why are all your old buildings grey or light brown? What was the main source of construction material? I know here in Toronto it was red clay. Always wanted to know.

The signage suits the podium really well.

The nice limestone facade incorporated into Bay Adelaide West is Tyndall Stone. It originated from the Winnipeg area. That may have something to do with it. I do see a fair bit of variety in the Winnipeg aerial photo.

Who chooses the colours? Is it done by neighourhood committee? What if everyone on the street chose yellow? What would happen?

It depends on the town but Halifax is quite laissez-faire, especially outside of wealthier areas (this neighbourhood is partially gentrified but was traditionally the poor part of the city). The owners pick their colours. Some try to coordinate and others try to stand out. It gets a lot louder than what's in this photo, which looks like it has a filter applied.

You might find this interesting, although it seems to be only a sampling of detached houses: https://www.instagram.com/oldhousesofhalifax/

The randomness inherent to how buildings are maintained and built in Halifax reminds me a bit of Toronto and I think it's one thing that makes Halifax interesting compared to other cities in Atlantic Canada and New England that started out with a similar stock of buildings around 1950. Saint John and Portland ME are preserved historic towns whereas Halifax has grown into something more unique and vibrant than what it used to be back then.

Yeah, I was being a bit facetious, I knew it was more or less random.

The houses in that link look totally New England, i.e. American. They really "pop" with colour. Thank god so much wood siding has been preserved.

Living in southern Ontario, though, I can't help but find the lack of brick a bit unnervingly unsubstantial, like they could just get blown away in the wind or burnt down by a casually tossed cigarette butt.

It's not rational, I know.

There really are places with committees that tell you which pre-approved paint colour you are allowed to use. I think that is more common in the US than Canada.

A lot of those old wooden houses are built much more substantially than modern ones (although they often have poor insulation, etc.). They were built with large hardwood beams and many actually do have brick walls. Most commonly they have brick firewalls on the sides but some are fully brick with wood shingles on top of that.

Here are some rowhouses that are all masonry construction:

https://www.google.ca/maps/@44.6432393,-...QLbTkCd3_lXuHuwSyyaXA!2e0!7i13312!8i6656
(the one with siding in the middle is probably brick underneath?)

https://www.google.ca/maps/@44.6622991,-...EnMK2y4OvZYO0-pynKvIg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

I would guess that Halifax is about 70/30 wood/brick in the older neighbourhoods. Around downtown Halifax there isn't much wood construction (I think it was banned in the mid-19th century).
