Went by the mall today. Pretty busy but not overwhelmingly packed. Lots of people driving in to shop but the roads weren't a parking lot this time. Comparatively fewer people commuting by transit.

only chance i really had to go shopping was wednesday evening, i wanted to go to metrotown but they closed at 9, they used to stay open later i thought, i know walmart used to be 24 hours but it wasn't this year.

the places we did go were steady but no long lines or busy feeling going on.

Metrotown closes at 10pm the week before Christmas. I think one or two years they tried 11pm but there was no point as the traffic didn't justify it.

ah i looked at their website and it said 9 pm. So didn't even bother going that way, could have got an hour in if it was open, i heard most of the mall was closing due to a power outage.

Finally visited the mall yesterday. It was packed with people for an early Thursday afternoon when half the city is out of town - the only time I could tolerate the drive there. Anyone hoping for a quick demise will be disappointed.

Store wise it was meh though, definitely won't drive all that way again - although I will drive past it on my way to the Seattle Premium Outlets as usual.

Highlight was a surprisingly delicious meal at Montana's, which I was expecting to be terrible. Although I'll go to the Coquitlam Centre one if I ever want to go again, due to Vancouver proper's terrible road infrastructure.

Bass Pro looked cool too, but not my scene at all.

Good lord those surface parking lots sure look ugly. Can't believe we still build these ridiculous big box store shopping centres.

that's way too many small stores for the commons. Most "commons" kinda shopping places fill in with outlet type stores that are already in the mills.

It's a mental exercise to think of stores to fill up all the slots. I quickly diverted to restaurant chains -- significant because it's the closest alternative to the ferry terminal. They do have a bunch of those listed for the expansion:

Curry Way, Triple-O's, Donair Affair, Uncle Fatih's pizza, Simply Pho Vietnamese, Booster Juice, Subway, Kin's Farm Market, Cob's Bread, Tim Horton's, Quiznos, Starbucks, Komome Japanese, Nando's, A&W, Menchies, Wings Tap & Grill, Wendy's, Taco Time, Arby's

other small leases: Shell gasoline, insurance, nails, beauty parlor, beauty supply, liquor, dental, fitness, childcare, tsawassen cultural centre

The restaurants will help generate regular traffic, but it looks like they ran out of ideas for non-food non-merchandise tenants real fast. What's left, tutoring? Escape room? Physiotherapist?

I could see them changing the format if they don't lease.
The problem I see with the smaller units is that there's no focus - it's tantamount to a self-storage facility where a customer would have to circle around several times just to see what stores and restaurants are available.

I'm surprised Dollarama feels confident enough to have a store in each development. I'd be skeptical they'll both last.

I went there a few weeks ago and I kinda liked it. But the entrances and exits were weird. I wish there was an independent coffeeshop, or at least a chain that is not Starbucks. There is a Woods Coffee in Tsawwassen Springs. Manzano Bakery will be there, the same one from Metrotown.

I did my second visit to the Mills yesterday. We arrived a bit after noon and it felt empty and quiet at first. I was already starting to wonder whether the lure of the new place has already passed, but the place started getting much busier after 3pm.

I did notice that some stores have already changed and there is a number of retail spaces still empty, at least a dozen. I guess that's common in a huge place like the Mills, but there are parts of the Mills that are busier than others.

Overall, I still didn't dislike the place. Once again I paid attention to the different ethnicity of the shopper from Metropolis. I also recently talked to an Indonesian friend of mine who loves shopping with his whole family. They live in Central Surrey and they used to to go Metropolis every weekend. Now they never visit Metrotown anymore and always drive to Mills instead. So there seems to be some lure in the south of Fraser.

So, one friend is evidence of 'lure' south of the Fraser? The only time Metrotown had a dozen empty spaces was after 2008. I don't think that is common even in large malls.

I was forced to use the Ferries on Wednesday and stopped to eat at the mall. It was empty (2PM) and remains cheap looking (a gyproc visual mess) and ugly . . . super ugly outside. After 3 visits, it seems as crowded as Laugheed Mall, middling at best, and nowhere near Metrotown or Coquitlam Centre.

The whole case for this development remains a mystery to me, but I hope it succeeds in some fashion. After all, if it doesn't, then what?

I went a second time since my pre-xmas emergency trip, and nothing I saw there made me want to go back. The Bass Pro Shop was a bit underwhelming when I finally got to see it, although I guess I fell for the hype.

With respect to small CRUs and restaurants, I would think restaurants would invest once they see the location is a destination for shoppers who will inevitably get hungry. The restaurants themselves aren't going to draw enough locals to survive, and most people in the Metro area looking for a chain eatery will find one closer to where they live.

something like a great wolf lodge would probably bring in some more people to the area. Hopefully the splashdown park gets upgraded and made more appealing.

I wonder if they could add a cover so it can get used longer

like this one looks like its going to be in Niagara falls.
