There's also the matter of which side of the building you're measuring from.

I actually find it quite surprising the Harbour Centre's mast is not included in its official height. It is certainly more than just a little antenna, and the way they light it up over the holidays makes it quite prominent in the skyline.

From what I understand about official bldg heights, they are measured from main entrance street level. So Harbour Centre would be from Hastings Street, but yes, it would be even taller if measured from Cordova Street , so that's 23 feet below Hastings and counting the mast it now measures 581 feet! Woowee!

Why does this irk me:
Edmonton - tallest bldg 820 ft. - NHL Stanley Cups 5 - population 1.2 mill.
Calgary - tallest bldg 810 ft. - NHL Stanley Cups 1 - population 1.2 mill.
Vancouver - tallest bldg 646 ft. - NHL Stanley Cups 0 - population 2.4 mill.

edmonton does not have a population over 1 million, you have to stretch out far to make it even close to that.

He's talking CMA populations, obviously. If you'd rather speak cities proper, then doesn't that then drop Vancouver to something closer around 600K?

Google metro pops Canada, in 2011 Edmonton 1.1+ and estimated at 1.2 million now.

closer to 700k now.

I really don't see howgreater edmonton is that big, theres nothing around it really surely leduc and stony plain aren't over 100,000 to boost the poulation that much

There's St. Albert, Spruce Grove, Sherwood Park and Fort Saskatchewan - just to name a few.

For what it's worth, the City of Leduc had a population in 2016 of 30,496 in 2016 (City of Leduc municipal census), while Leduc County had 13,524 in 2011 (2011 national census).

Not necessarily an apples to apples comparison due to the census year difference, but together the City & County of Leduc have a minimum population of about 44,000.

As for the other independent communities in Leduc County:

Stony Plain had a 2011 population of 15,051 (2011 national census).
Beaumont had a 2016 population of 17,720 (2016 municipal census).
Devon had a 2011 population of 6,500 (2011 national census).
Calmar had a 2011 population of 1,970 (2011 national census).
Thorsby had a 2011 population of 951 (2011 national census).
Warburg had a 2011 population of 791 (2011 national census).

So just adding these up on the back of an envelope, we're looking at something on the order of 87,000 (and likely a good bit higher) south of Edmonton. That's not 100,000, mind you, but it will likely get within spitting distance when the 2016 census numbers are tallied up.

As for the other major suburban population areas:

In 2016 St. Albert was at 64,645 (2016 municipal census).
In 2016 Spruce Grove had 33,640 (2016 municipal census).
In 2015 Sherwood Gardens had 68,782 (2015 municipal census).
In 2016, Ft. Saskatchewan had 24,569 (2016 municipal census).

So just adding up what I'll collectively call Leduc (87,000), and the above mentioned four communities (191,636), and that gets us to 278,636-ish, bearing in mind the range of census numbers.
