To go back to the Winnipeg thing I'm not sure why Brandon and Winnipeg can't bid an all Manitoba tourny? Keystone arena is a decent venue at 5100 seats. Fairly modern. And MTSC would serve as an excellent main arena. It's too bad Winnipeg doesn't have a secondary venue. Obviously it's not needed between the MTS Ice plex, MTS Centre and "the burt" True North has the perfect flexibility of concert space and Ice sheets. But it does slightly hinder them on events like this.

Not sure how Abbotsford beat Saskatoon. Saskatoon is a semi-regular stop on North American tours, I've never seen one that stopped in Abbotsford.

There's nothing really indicating that Winnipeg/Brandon cannot host a future WJHC.

For a while Hockey Canada was employing a fairly consistent regional rotation. Two consecutive tournaments in Toronto & Montreal disrupted that but it's still more or less consistent:

1999: Prairies
2003: Maritimes
2006: Pacific
2009: Ontario/Quebec (I guess?)
2010: Prairies
2012: West
2015: Ontario/Quebec
2017: Ontario/Quebec
2019: Pacific
2021: ????

Maritime region will be longest due for a tournament followed by Prairies in 2021.

Outside of regional rotation the arena size and suitable has to be looked in to as well:

2003: 10K/5K
2006: 18K/15K/5.5K
2009: 19K/10K
2010: 15K/6K
2012: 18K/18K
2015: 18K/20K
2017: 18K/20K
2019: 18K/7K
2021: ???

If Winnipeg could guarantee tremendous attendance for both Winnipeg/Brandon it could be feasible and similar in scale to Saskatoon/Regina in 2010. It depends on how Hockey Canada wants to move forward after attendance issues the past two events in the largest venues possible. It depends on if they want to continue going for revenue maximization in NHL-size arenas or if they want to return to smaller rinks in smaller centres around the country. We won't know the host of 2021 for another year or so at least.

I know this has nothing to do with Canada but I was just looking at Tmobile arena in vegas and after doing some research, vegas has 4 arenas within a 4 mile radius! 10k 12k 17k and 19k. That's insane! 3 are owned by the same company so it's not like T-mobile is going to hurt anyone I just thought it was amazing that a city that size can support 4 arenas. When most cities cant support 2.

Speaking of which. City council voted to re purpose rexall into a sports training complex. However They are reaching out to other minor sports organizations such as lacross and soccer to find out if they want to be included in the designs

More than that, no? T-Mobile, MGM, and the University of Nevada all have 17k+ arenas in Las Vegas.

Not Canadian news, but interesting nonetheless to see that another football team will be shacking up with a MLS team this year... the LA Chargers will spend the next couple of seasons at the StubHub Center until their permanent stadium is built.

I read that the city of San Diego was going to kick in 200 mil and not a penny more but the guy got greedy. Pigs get slaughtered - hope the Calgary Flames noticed this story!

Yeah - I shook my head when I heard what he is paying in relocation fees. I just don't get this kind if greedyness when you're already so rich. Perhaps that's one reason I'm not rich.

Sounds like oakland isnt to far from moving to vegas. New 1.6B stadium a rock throw from the strip I do beleive 750M was comming from the city So the rest is private, plus relcation fees. How in gods name is this profitable? Really solidifies the fact that California is pretty much done throwing money at the NFL though. The inglewood stadium will be private money as well Chargers got a sweetheart deal there for sure

Governments and the public are realizing what a fool's errand it is to throw money at teams in a bid to get them to come/stay. Especially cities like Los Angeles where the NFL needs it more than it needs the NFL.

At this point it's mainly smaller markets craving pro sports validation that still engage in the practice.

Based on the CBS Sports article someone posted about a week ago the Chargers owner might have made a very stupid deal in the long run. Given that he could have easily kept the team in San Diego and probably ended up just as well off if not better, I have to question what the hell he's thinking. Like the article mentioned, the Chargers could end up being the #4 football team in L.A. which is not a good place to be in. Plus he doesn't even control the stadium. Isn't that what owners keep saying they want?!

As for the Raiders, what do they plan on doing until this new stadium is built? Stay in Oakland or play out of a university stadium in Vegas?

^ Spanos is probably looking at the LA Clippers as a model. LA is a big and lucrative enough market that you can make a pile of money being the afterthought team playing in someone else's venue... and if your team wins a few games while the dominant team is slumping, even better.

But it's kind of funny... the Chargers are basically set to become LA's version of the Argos. Next year should be interesting.
