Millennium Line - Broadway Extension: Planning & Pre-Construction

I looks like that Millenium line is going to be very long. From Lincoln to Kits must be about 20 miles or 32 kilometres. New York's longest is about 30 miles though.

When complete, the Yonge line in Toronto will be 39km.

according to google maps measure distance tool, it is approximately 30kms to Arbutus Street and 38kms to UBC - Main Mall

It does make sense to get the line up to Broadway and to have a station at Main/Kingsway.

Next question:
Is is feasible to build this thing in stages? The most pressing need is to get the Millenium Line connected to the Canada Line. Could it be built and opened to City Hall with the intervening stations only roughed in? And then extended to Arbutus or as far as the money will take it?

If they had 2 phases, the first phase to Arbutus, the second phase to UBC, that would make the most sense.

If they started the second phase as soon as the first phase is opened, that would quickly get it done.

Like how the 2nd phase from Lougheed to Coquitlam was started as soon as the Millennium line opened.

Better late than never. And if we're going to wait to fund the line all the way from Clark to UBC, it's probably closer to "never."

The Canada Line jumped cue due to the Olympics.

In the end I would not be surprised if we are only 3 to 4 years behind in total regarding our current completed network.

The Arbutus phase of the Broadway line is such a no-brainer. Those station locations are "all killer no filler" in comparison to the other lines built, which are usually a mix of key locations and future transit/retail/residential nodes.

I wouldn't be surprised if the ridership of an M-Line from Coquitlam to Arbutus is higher than current Canada Line numbers.

If that 70,000 passengers per day number shows up, 55,000 of them need to be new Millennium Line riders for that to be true already

Depends. How many of the existing B-Line riders use SkyTrain (including Canada Line). I wouldn't call that additional ridership.

The Broadway Extension last time I checked is supposed to have a ridership of about 230,000 not long after it opens. About 100,000 of that is B-Line riders.

Wow. That being the case, it seems the Broadway Skytrain line has got to be the Number One Transportation priority for all of Metro. Ask Justin to kick in a %, too.

I don't think he's committed to this project specifically, but he did say that generally the federal share of transit projects would rise from 33% to 50%.

Justin says a lot of things but I doubt the Feds would ever fund 50% of the Broadway Extension while he is the Prime Minister. Too Eastern centric...

I am not worried about the federal contribution for this project. Hope there is actually a little more detail released about the stations this time around, but if the Surrey open house is any hint not expecting there to be.

What is left to decide on this route? I feel like this is at least the 4th cycle of public consultation on this project that can never seem to get a shovel in the ground.
