Bing Thom was definitely inspired by Toyo Ito's design in Barcelona:

I prefer Ito's design with more variation and irregularity in the pattern

I can see why you'd like the Ito design on that Barcelona street, but there is something to keep in mind.
First the buildings are smaller, in a row, and of the same height, allowing more latitude in the daringness of the design.
The First Baptist building is much larger, and such irregularity would give it a possibly 'strange' look.
For a large building, the design statement is still there, but more disciplined, considering the building's height and scale, and the fact that it stands out alone, and not in a row of buildings.

One of the reasons it works is because it contrasts with the modernist dark glass façade next door.
If it were between 2 classical facades it wouldn't work.

I spoke to my friend who lives in one of the houses slated to be torn down for this development. She seems to think she has another two years there according to her landlord? Not sure how accurate that information is.

Good question, i was wondering what stage this project was at. Is it approved?

I'm sure she easily has a year, 2 wouldn't shock me. the Building still needs to be rezoned, DP granted, BP granted and the units need to be sold.

This one is still very early in the process.

Just pulling this one up to keep it in people's awareness.
Has Nelson-on-the-Park been scrapped definitively.? Shame.
The first baptist tower will be rather a ground breaker in design, I think.
Can't wait to see it get built.

From what I hear, Westbank plans on beginning to market this project in the fall while 1550 Alberni will begin in spring

Very likley. In the 95%+ range.

As for Nelson on the Park, it is not dead, someone bought it. They could use the old plans or develop their own. Who knows.

My friend lives on the property set to be demolished for this project. I believe she said they have until sometime between now and the Summer before they tear it down. sounds promising.

Promising, except for the fact that people are being kicked out of their homes. So many people are being displaced as these types of projects come up. Where do these people go, especially those who are older and on fixed incomes?
