Damn the building on the left is beautiful. Where did it sit / what did we lose it to?

I believe the one on the left is the old post office, Current site of the Westin.
The one on the right is the Tegler Building.

Edmonton has lost a lot of gems.

That's why we need initiatives to save what we have left.
No idea what's up with the Canada Permanent Building (the group behind the French plaza concept seemed to have gone silent). Looks like Ernest Block is getting the facade treatment (better than nothing). We have various schools over 100 years old and quite a few of them need serious renovations.

Here are a few more that I would have like to see standing today...

Downtown Library:

Courthouse:

Imperial Bank:

Municipal Telephone Bldg:

BMO:

Royal Bank:

And since I'm posting historical photos...here's one of Jasper and 99st from 1925:

That last picture... now terrible podium of the McDonald building and a crappy parking lot and the ugly Marriot.
It just hurts.

There is something incredibly depressing about looking at buildings like this at night when interior lights are on and seeing the massive amount of open concept spaces.

From an energy conservation P-O-V, I get your point. OTOH, in the dog days of winter, I tend to give a bit more leeway than in June or July!

No.... I know where SHOFEAR is going with this.... He is lamenting the loss of the private office spaces galore and the 350 sq/ft per person of yesteryear. New realities dictate efficiency and value per sq.ft. unfortunately. But, I've heard your pitch before and ride the hypocritical line of having private office space personally, but see value in companies implementing open concept floorplans.

I was only commenting on lights being on, when they wouldn't otherwise have to be.

I've no idea how the floors are laid out or if there are or aren't large, small, teeny tiny offices.

he might well have good reason for where he is going over and above his own workspace situation.

staff productivity and turnover costs have much more impact on the corporate bottom line than what gets spent on space.

Like anything and like the article mentions, it all depends on the work being done.
I've seen open office spaces work great especially when you have a high % of new staff or common issues where cross training/pollination makes sense between peers.
I've also seen it be of no value and only add distraction or frustration.

Lots of companies don't think about any of it and just look at the immediate bottom line of less $/sq Ft for each staff or 'hey the industry trend is X so let's do that'.

I don't want to elaborate too much because I don't want to divulge to much personal info.

I get it is necessary in some industries, but after seeing my work environment go from a very high percentage of offices, to a very high percentage of open spaces and witnessing what happens to productivity, sickness, providing a sense of arrival for highly valued junior staff and most importantly, the ability to properly service the clients who are paying for your service, no accountant or trendy architect will ever convince me to go through that in the office I now manage.

Coincidentally your employer tried to implement this in an overseas office many many years ago. 100% open space. not one office. It did not last long.

And factually I've implemented open concepts with success for certain groups for the reasons I already mentioned.
Citing one example, without context, from however many years ago tries to paint a picture that it doesn't work and has no place. That simply isn't true, it works sometimes and it doesn't others and companies really need to consider their business they are doing in the space and the user group and not jump on some bandwagon one way or the other.
