The only hope we have for another super tall outside of Vista in Chicago over the next 10 years or so is the Spire site. I'll be disappointed if it's less than 1500 feet. Angry if it's less than 1200 and if it's less than 1000? Don't even bother building it.

While fully acknowledging how pie in the sky this all is, I gotta say that this would be an utterly fantastic spot in the skyline for a new tallest building in chicago.

With how big that block is there is no fing way something like that smith gill design is going up in that location if Thompson center is demolished.

Not that this is happening any time soon, but I've gotta go with the Jahn design if only bc it saves the atrium of the original building, which is definitely worth saving. Imagine sitting in Daley Plaza without it. There's nothing like it in the city, or in the country really. It's playful and totally democratic. It's curves and open space are a welcome reprieve from the modernist buildings that surround it, and the fluid ambition of the Smith Gill design, while admirable if not totally realized, would destroy any sense of civic engagement. Jahn's tower is bold for sure but I'd like to see more renderings of it.

I'm so confused. Take a day off from this place, and there are 5 separate proposals for the Thompson site? Are any of these serious, or just thought exercises? I'd heard Rauner wants to sell the center, but hadn't heard anyone was actually doing design work.

Just concepts for what might happen after a sale. Rauner demonstrating ways to maximize the value of the land, Jahn countering with a way to balance that with preservation of the Thompson Center. I prefer the latter approach by a wide margin.

They are just exercises to show what could be built there.

This Thompson Center thing was actually already on NBC 5 this morning. "Too soon, too soon". haha. Last time a "fantasy" was on the news this early was when the Spire came up, but that actually turned into something for the time being until it failed. I realize this is basically just the city making a declaration of prime real estate being named available to buyers, but does the press really have to push it as a "1700 ft. reality"? Or is that just part of the cities agenda to pay news stations off to help sell the lot. An entire city block leaves you with a lot of potential, but with a main CTS hub connected to it, it also leaves much confusion. We have to be looking at a One World Trade center type of deal(aka 3-4 billion) especially with mulitple towers. I would love to have it happen but just doesnt seem in any near future.

It's the Loop. In the end it will be 2-3 glass rectangles ranging from 40-50 floors built over 10 years. Like every other proposal in the Loop. Profit over substance.

I love the Jahn proposal, half because that tower is gorgeous, the other half because it saves the Thompson Center. I think that would be the perfect location for a downtown market, maybe open air in the summer? Chicago doesnt really have any markets like this, when most cities do, and it would be unlike any other market in the country.

Also, they should repaint the TC in that sexy black, white scheme, it would look almost like Vader
