Robots are playing bigger roles in manufacturing, and a new public-private partnership, based in Pittsburgh, will work to make sure those robots are made in America, helping American manufacturers.

The U.S. Department of Defense is announcing today that American Robotics, an independent non-profit spawned by Carnegie Mellon University will receive more than $250 million to launch the Advanced Robotics Manufacturing Innovation Hub, based in Pittsburgh.

According to a CMU news release, the Department of Defense designation and funding puts the city and CMU, “at the center of a new wave of manufacturing,” and will leverage and coordinate a variety of emerging technologies to make industrial robotics more affordable, adaptable and useful for businesses large and small.

CMU President Subra Suresh, in an email sent to the campus community, praised the teamwork that resulted in the partnership that is expected to provide benefits for the region.

CMU is basically a defense contractor, so this makes sense.

The housing authority, through its development affiliate Allies & Ross Management and Development Corp., is teaming up with developer KBK to build the two- to three-unit townhouses on Hamilton Avenue and Susquehanna and Kelly streets. Under the proposed plan, about one-third of the units would be market rate, one-third would be public housing, and one-third low income.

I understand this sensitivity to rental low-income or public housing, but the market rate units would be an important addition, and generally Homewood is a great opportunity to combine TOD and affordability.

Keith B. Keys, principal of KBK Enterprises, gave the most detailed presentation of the evening, regarding Kelly Hamilton. Bounded by Lang Avenue, Murtland Street, Hamilton Avenue and Kelly Street, Kelly Hamilton will be a mixed-income community, with some units subsidized and others rented at market rates. Rents for the 58 units will range from $744 to $845 a month with subsidy, and $1,200 to $1,300 for market rate units. Construction is expected to take 12 to 15 months.

This is the block they are describing. It is pretty close to Homewood Station on the Busway.

This is great news for our area. With the explosion of robotics, AI and cyber security threats, I really think Pittsburgh is in an absolutely amazing position to become one of the great tech node cities of the world. As in, a huge renaissance of jobs and money flowing back into this region.

Great angle, from the foreground with the Innovation Collaboration building over to Scott Hall and Hamerschlag Hall to the obfuscation of Wean Hall (), you can clearly see Henry Hornbostel's original layout. Also in the back right is the stately, oft-ignored 9 story Park Mansions co-op residential building.

I've taken that similar angle many times, this view will get even better as development ramps up at Carnegie Mellon.

I just walked around Carnegie Mellon yesterday, the new student center or whatever across from Forbes Avenue has topped out I believe; ie the elevator shafts are to their final heights. It will make for an awesome gate like entrance entering The Carnegie Mellon area driving east on Forbes.

By the way, I'm not complaining overall because this is a big get for the region and it is great it is going to help anchor the ALMONO development. But I am a little bummed the mill building will not be open to the public as originally planned.

On the other hand, the building inside a building thing is pretty cool, and seen from the outside it will actually probably be like the Uber facility but even more so:

I was actually never a big fan of the Hornbostel campus, and I think the new stuff is really livening it up.

I personally don't hate that house or think it looks "shacky". I like the planter out front. It just needs 1 or more windows to make the facade look more appealing.

Well, me neither. It struck me as very utilitarian lacking "wow factor". But as you mentioned the new modern additions have really spiced up that campus.
