That's the SFU Segal Graduate School of Business, originally the Merchants Bank from 1915 and then doubled in size in the early 1920s. It was converted to its current use, and extensively restored, but over a decade ago. No doubt it needs further TLC, as early stone buildings in the city frequently require.

Haha, if you guys think that is third world looking you may need a little bit of a reality check. I have seen much worse than that in every country I have ever been in (from my balcony right now I can see worse).
Thanks for this Christmas. The article mentions Uniqlo interest and perhaps a smaller Simons. My guess is Uniqlo, perfect location, perhaps Muji will take a small portion of the development. Exciting and long overdue!
It would be nice if a retailer with longer evening hours moved into the retail space.
I always thought HMV would be good on Granville (I always remember browsing around Charlie's Records before the movies), but I guess they must think there'd be too much shoplifting.
That west side of the building would have been mostly unseen until now. The front is a little less ugly.
What I see there is affordable (relatively speaking) housing.
Bingo, this building is not Fuerdai housing but for those average Canadians. The vast layouts of the apartments and quality details like hardwood flooring throughout are often overlooked by the simple modern stucco facade that was popular at the time.

Locals need quality and modern housing too, especially since many of the apartments are rented out market rate. Those fire-hazard and musty buildings are rather 3rd world in my opinion. Time to upgrade.
This article truly spells out how sad our downtown retail space is. Even Indigo bookstore cannot find a proper permanent space, while several nice ones are opened out in the suburbs. Same goes for Simons.
