Net-zero. It generates just as much energy as it consumes.

That makes sense. I, perhaps prejudicially, thought it had something to with fishing, at least metaphorically.

As terrible as stucco is, vinyl will always be worse.

Go **** yourself. Kidding, but, honestly, nothing worse than stucco.

as someone who's seen once-great neighbourhoods turn to this, I beg to differ.

Naw - vinyl is worse than stucco overall. There's actually good examples of stucco, although most is of the cheap looking variety. That being said it would be just downright weird to see see stucco in a place like St. John's...

YOU go **** yourself! I live in a stucco house in a neighbourhood with nothing but it! Maybe we've both just become too used to the ugly materials around us to see how bad it really is.

I actually don't mind vinyl in the example Franco401 put up too much. But the one that looks like corrugated metal like in the Edmonton proposal is just vile. Poor warehouse worker's gonna get drunk one night and end up at work cause it looks the same.

I see I am on the losing end of the stucco debate, that's fine.

I don't like vinyl. I just find stucco looks like flame-retardant foam. I genuinely thought when I first moved to Winnipeg that the neighbourhood wasn't finished and they were just waiting until spring to but put on the vinyl or brick over the "flame-retardant foam".

You would HATE California Pretty much everything built in the last 100 years or so seems to be stucco. Including street fronting 1920s rowhouse areas in San Francisco like this: https://goo.gl/maps/u1CVpj1yMdJ2

The urban form saves that a bit compared to stucco suburbia on the prairies, but yeah... yech. It just looks so cheap.

Which freaks me out because I know that the vast majority of people feel that way looking at our clapboard, but I just don't. There's something wrong with me.

I actually agree with you, I feel the same way about stucco. But I would definitely prefer to live in the first rather than the second:

Personally I find that part of San Fran to be a bit soul-destroying (Sunset and Richmond districts). Doesn't help that they seem to be covered in fog half the time. Not worth it considering each of those rowhouses is probably worth more than I'll earn in the next few decades.

I actually quite like older areas in LA like this: https://goo.gl/maps/vYa79oS6p9J2

I'm sure that hits on ALL of SHH's dislikes!

That second one isn't vinyl. Isn't that some sort of metal? Like an industrial building?

****

I just... give me suburban St. John's:

Of suburban some-other-cities-I've-lived-in:

Anyday.

I'd take at least an extra four months to kill myself in the former than the latter.

My chest is tight from the horror. That is perfectly awful to me.

Looked like vinyl to me, but I could be mistaken. I definitely agree though. Of the two examples you put up, the first is much more appealing. There must be an intermixed spectrum of ugliness, where stucco and vinyl follow each other multiple times based on colour and quality.

As an Ontarian, I find both stucco and vinyl to be cheap looking.

It's definitely the color variation that is helping St. John's. The monotone stucco suburbia of the prairies is definitely soulsucking. The endless 'double-wide' sprawl of the outer areas of St John's is bad, but at least there is color.

Then there's all that stuff on the hills of duplexes and demise with no trees up in Mt. Pearl. I'll take the prairies over that. I don't know who wants to live there but it's not me.

Yeah, agreed. At that point, even I would prefer trees over the "urban" form.

For those who've never been here... there is a ring of duplex suburbia around the entire cities of St. John's and Mount Pearl. It's basically our welfare equivalent of street car suburbia - NOT the core, in any sense - but close to it.

It's just awful.

And to give you a hint of how much life it strips away... signs aren't allowed outside, but businesses are, so I guarantee you in that view there is, at minimum, a dog grooming place, a nail salon, and massage parlour, and a graphic design studio. Because I or a friend have to be each of those in that neighbourhood, which is only two streets. So if it wasn't this one, it was the one behind but still technically "in view".

My opinion has changed over the last 10 years as both products have become more common in Toronto. The brick being used in suburbia looks cheap as hell and the installations are as sloppy as the material looks cheap.

Also, Most infill around my parts has brick or split faced engineered stone on the front facade and an off coloured stucco on the rest of the sides. You can't get any worse than this.

At least the colour matches here but, it still looks like 🞵🞵🞵🞵
