I don't know... I certainly wouldn't use those numbers to suggest that SK has a low level of interest in the NHL. It's merely 3 points lower than Alberta which has 2 NHL teams to generate a local rooting interest. Plus anyone who has ever been to SK knows that NHL hockey is a pretty big deal there, even if there isn't a unanimous rooting interest in one team the way there is in NHL markets.

^^ Alberta does have second lowest interest in NHL of all provinces listed but it also has lowest in almost every other sports league as well, just isn't a sporty province I guess.. the stark difference between Alberta with 3 times as many people as each of Manitoba and Saskatchewan is that Football is highest by far in Saskatchewan but NHL is lowest. Manitoba is highest for NHL in Canada, I wonder why?
Saskatchewan's main interest in NHL is largely based on certain players in the league like Regina's Ryan Getzlaf captain in Anaheim, but couldn't care less about other teams in the league in comparison to all other provinces. That's why a match up between the Toronto Maple Leafs & Ottawa Senators could barely get 13,000 at SaskTel Centre but Saskatchewan Rush Pro Lacrosse regular season tickets sell out at 15,000 in the same venue.

Manitoba's numbers are sky high because everyone was excited about the return of the Jets. I'm sure those honeymoon numbers will tail off a bit when the next results of that survey come out, but then they'll increase again if the team does well and has a solid playoff run.

What you describe re: Sask is precisely where Manitoba was 10 years ago in terms of NHL interest. Lots of overall hockey interest, solid fan interest in local teams, strong overall interest in the NHL but without any single team to root for. There were several non sellouts for NHL preseason games here too, but obviously TNSE did not interpret that as lack of interest in the NHL generally.

Where does that fact come from? Proof that Saskatchewan's main interest is in certain players? BS. If a player moves teams people don't switch who they follow. Saskatchewan people aren't that shallow everyone I know follows "their" team regardless of players.

As for an 13,000 vs 15,000, Saskatoon has a pro team in a pro league that they have gotten behind at least for now.

most people I know don't follow NHL but the people I do know that follow it follow certain players that they know through friends or family. In the past, I know coworkers that flew to Newark specifically to watch the New Jersey Devils play because of close link to certain player(s) from Sask. One of my hockey friends only started taking notice of the Montreal Canadiens with Carey Price after the Olympics, because his childhood friend is cousins with him. I don't know for sure, but I think when my parents did watch more NHL during the Oilers dynasty days with Gretzki and Messier but when Gretzki went to LA I think their interested died off.. I really don't know of any long term fans of certain NHL hockey teams, just not in my circle of friends anyways.

and since you are a Regina resident, why are you so critical of Saskatoon?
I noticed you posted this about the city a few days ago..

..A sad list for such a big time city. One downtown building of medium height and bugger all else. Sorry Save on Foods, don't cut it. Talk to me when IKEA build, then I'll be excited about a store..

I'd like to know how many shows weren't reported to Pollstar and thus not included in the figures. Some of the numbers look way too low to me.

Seems odd, especially since Garth Brooks had 6 sold out shows in Saskatoon which would have accounted for the 90,000 on its own.

You can get Rush tickets as low as 24 bucks (before all the fees and what not) and I think they go up to $55. Not sure what the pre season hockey game was, but probably in the neighborhood of $40-$80.
