Wow to the shoe shine shop! It's a museum! How much for a shine?
Not sure. I've been meaning to pop in and talk to the guy but he's always hanging out laughing with his old mates. The café people next door say that he's been there forever and that the shop will only close whenever he does, so to speak.
Ugh, it makes me want to quote a Monkey Ronin post and try to find the closest approximation of what's pictured from here. Most would be hilariously awful, but some are close enough.
Enjoy an authentic above-ground experience of what it was like to ride a streetcar through city streets before The Event. Please board slowly and remain seated during the ride. Electro-shock therapy is available afterward should you experience any emotional discomfort from exposure to a facsimile of life above ground before The Event.
Remember, life before The Event was not quite as real or idyllic as you may imagine it was. That the surface of the earth was inhabitable was probably a fluke of nature. We are now living in a more viable Reality.
Man am I happy I don't live somewhere with that awful streetcar cable system. I can't stand cables running everywhere like that and would lose my mind! Even just what the c-trains have bothers me and I wish they were all underground.

I'm a commuter to Toronto from a far-flung burgh, and as a commuter I tend to forget about all there is to appreciate about the city I commute to, at least during the daily grind in and out. But when I visit as a non-commuter, those images represent exactly the kinds of things I appreciate about Toronto.
I do like the overhead wires, but the actual tracks always seem like a tripping hazard (or slipping hazard in winter/rainy days). Another reason to prefer buses. ;-)
