I also filmed the New sections of Autoroute 73, south of Québec city, between Ste-Marie to St-Georges in the Beauce region, in October.
Enjoy.

What is the mean operating speed on those highways? I know they are posted at 90 km/h but the demanding curves and elevation changes make that seem generous. I would have probably posted at least 299 at 80 km/h.

Oh there is usually recommended speed at every tight/dangerous curves generally by multiple of 5km/h ( don't ask me why ! ) such as 45, 55 ,65 etc...
You see one yellow sign right at the beginning, the rest of the curves were ''ok'' to me. It doesn't looks like it in the video because it's sped up 4x.

As for the Autoroute 73 extension to Maine, I would say that is a low priority. It really shouldn't be done to the border unless there is a commitment for Maine to upgrade US 201, and I'd say connecting NB-1 to I-95 via the ME-9 corridor is much higher priority.

Could those be relics to the imperial days, since those translate well to 30, 35 and 40 mph?

Oh it would be great if it was extended to the border, but I totally agree, it isn't a priority, plus there is not that much traffic that deserve a full dual-carriageway to the border right now.

Probably not. Many of the highways with 45-55-65 kmh ramp speeds are fairly new. Or at least were built since the metric conversion.

In that case, perhaps it is instead due to the fact that it's almost exactly 25, 30 and 35 nautical miles.

It could also be that they use FHWA design standards from the U.S. for their exit ramps, and when they convert them from mph to kmh, it comes out to speeds ending in 5.

One of my favourite freeway drives. Autoroute 5, and 50 are the only two Quebec Autoroutes I've driven in their entirety.

^Interesting video, I didn't realize the Coquihalla was built in so short a timeframe. It should take the TCH designation.

I didn't realize it was built that quickly either. Funny how tiny road improvements, bridges, or mass transit for a couple km can take a decade but a monumental feat like this can be done in 20 months. Makes you realize how much we can do when we put our minds to it.

Part of it is putting your mind to it. Part of it as well is it being a different era; an era where it is a lot harder to drum up a Global protest to a major project at the drop of a hat.

Why did they have such a strict deadline for finishing it up? Were they trying to get it done before a government change or something?
