There has to be some kind of value capture mechanism to fund it. It would be a huge catalyst for City West.

If they can do it in Dallas, they can do it in DTLA.

I realize that was a throwaway comment, but for the record it's probably easier to get things like this done in places like Dallas, especially when you have locals donating millions to finance it...

Your point is absolutely valid; and its like saying that things are easier to do in Whichita, KS than it is to do in New York City. The more people in a city, the more expensive it is to do things, the more people have differing views, the more complex. Of course things are easier in Dallas than LA. LA metro has over 15 million people. The benefit of more people in a space is not to make things easier, but to be in the innovation, creativity, community. LA and California is slower than other states in things, but it also innovates more than other places.

LA gets tons done when there is enough will. Look at Measure R and M or the reduction of smog the past few decades that allow views of downtown seen in the beautiful pictures above, or the perception only 8 years ago that downtown LA was a no mans land. If enough people in LA want something, we will create it. The word just hasn't got around to enough people about these freeway park concepts. So let's get the word out. Also when a freeway cap happens in DTLA, it will probably be over the 101 first since that actually has political will and the ability to connect with the River.

Undoubtedly, I'm in the minority here...but I don't know that I'd want the 110 capped through downtown. The 101 absolutely, in both downtown and Hollywood, but there's something iconic to the image of traffic pulsing through the burgeoning canyon of skyscrapers in Bunker Hill and now South Park that I think would be a loss for Los Angeles in a way. I'm sure it's quite thrilling from the freeway and from the overpasses as well. I suppose it's a sort of pick-your-battles situation. For me, the river revitalization and the 101 caps, and the Metro expansion would be much preferred priorities.

But that's just me..

I think it would be pretty difficult to cap the entirety of the 110 as it passes through downtown, given all the ramps and differing elevations (The 101 seems easy in comparison). But like someone mentioned earlier, a cap between 7th and Wilshire would be a great start/first link.

I know this project was canceled but are there any new proposals in Downtown or other parts of LA, in the 60's to 70's futurist aesthetic?

This project wasn't cancelled. It's under construction. Just in a much different form.

I agree with you... whenever I travel up from San Diego i always marvel at the size of LA's skyscrapers from the 110. I think it would look amazing if the 110 was bordered by a skyscraper canyon wall on both sides of downtown and city west

City West will never reach its full potential without better connections to DTLA. There's a reason the skyscraper wall on the 110 is essentially on one side and not the other. Also, aside from driving through, better pedestrian connections will massively improve quality of life and convenient housing options for people actually living there.

I agree with a previous poster that it would be extremely challenging to cap the whole downtown section of the 110, which is why I proposed just one comparatively easy section between Wilshire and 7th. That would already make a huge difference.

I just remembered this.

http://www.curbed.com/2016/8/11/12441906/freeway-underpass-california-walking

Something like this should be added to freeway underpasses in LA to increase pedestrian connectivity. 8th, 9th, and Olympic under the 110 should have first priority.

I know, but are there any new proposals in that 60s to 70s futurist late modernist style?

An underpass like this in DTLA would be less likely to become tent city than current ones because there would be more people walking under it.

From having lived in Paris, I can say that the homeless problem there is similar to that in LA. Paris is a place that properly invests in things like nice pedestrian underpasses, etc. Improvements to pedestrian access and general quality of the streetscape are anti-correlated with the number of homeless people setting up their tents. As King Kill 'em said, the more people walking through, the less attractive it is to have a tent there.

The alternative is doing nothing and having a shitty, unsafe pedestrian experience trying to get from City West to DTLA and vice versa.

Also just keep permitting a — ton of new housing and hotels so the ratio of transiets/normals falls.
