what? i thought they were adding an east entrance as in officedwellers post? or was that more an idea and not what was going on?

are they only addressing that one entrance with the 3 escalators?

This drawing does not reflect the station reality, in particular showing a connection to Park Place from the ticket hall level that does not exist.

Well the stub exists next to the elevator but everything under the road is just imaginary.

Tranlink announced there will be "Temporary Access Changes" to Metrotown station on Dec 26 Boxing day.

Quote:
Temporary Access Changes

On Monday, December 26, changes to the way customers access Metrotown SkyTrain Station, the mall, and other destinations will temporarily change.

- Due to station upgrades, crowding is anticipated and pedestrian traffic patterns will change depending on the conditions.
- Passengers who require the use of an elevator or escalator are encouraged to take accessible shuttle from Patterson Station.
- Customers travelling with strollers or large, bulky items should take the shuttle from Royal Oak and Patterson stations.

Even the extra sets of escalators to the lower train platform is imaginary. At present there is only one flight of escalator on the east side.

Yeah, that's the architectural rendering from before the station was built. i.e. there's no canopy over the plaza, either.
The stub is a bank of doors on the Park Place side of the concourse (or I guess, as MIPS says, a former flower shop has been located there).

... and the lower level seems to go really deep (to Royal Centre?) on the right side.

Ageed. I think that whatever solution they put in place the Easter entrance should not use the 3 escalators of the west exit, rather there should be a completely separate entrance like Granville/Dunsmuir.

A little of the topic - if the new entrance connects with Park Place (666 Burrard) what are the chances of one day connecting that to Pacific Mall? Sort of like Tokyo subway entrances that can run for blocks underground and emerge somewhere just because it's cool

Probably unlikely unless the 2 short office buildings along Dunsmuir east of Park Place get redeveloped
- plus Pacific Centre is at grade on Dunsmuir with just an underpass to Holt Renfrew.
The City also doesn't like underground connections and would rather have pedestrians on the sidewalks.

If I could find the sources to some of Ron Love's drawings there's a number of really well illustrated pieces that do a much better job of showing how the underground stations are laid out and what they have proposed. For the most part I'm only finding thumbnails and low-res junk from the Buzzer Blog/Illustrated Vancouver.

For comparison, Granville and Burrard.

Park Place was built with the future east station entrance to Burrard in mind. This renovation is going ahead and is in direct response to the capacity upgrades announced in phase 1 of Translinks new funding, as apparently Burrard station's existing entrance is already at capacity.

His question was whether a tunnel would be built to link Burrard Station via Park Place to Pacific Centre Mall
- not whether this entrance would be built.

Haha ya whoops I quoted the wrong one of your statements.

I meant to quote what you posted before about the flower shop stub just to clarify that in addition to the stub in Burrard station there's also existing infrastructure across the street at Park Place.

Got it.
It'll be interesting to see what they do - because they'll need to build a ticketing mezzanine where the faregates would be located.
Based on current station design, there's usually 2 sets of elevators with faregates between.
Conceivably, there could be escalators from street to ticketing mezzanine, then only elevators to the platforms.
Presumably, the ticketing mezzanine would be built under Dunsmuir Street or within the existing Park Place retail concourse or in the parkade.
It would certainly be a way for Park Place to increase pedestrian traffic in its tiny retail concourse.

Central stationhouse at metrotown station. Photos taken by me on Dec. 20, 2016.

Entrance

Sorry about the godawful quality of this photo, but it shows very well the new stationhouse. It appears that there will be a staircase and elevators.

Btw, can I downsize the resolution of the photos without using an image editor? Thank you

For Burrard I think they should build a tunnel that connects to the existing mezzanine where the faregates are. Just build out the foyer opposite where the escalators come down.

The space seems a bit crowded, but that's just because everyone has to queue up for the escalators. It's almost like there are too many fare gates there. If there was another way out, another set of escalators, then it wouldn't be so bad.

I'm worried about having another exit that might directly access the platforms at one end. When the added the other exit at Granville, it was great. But I've noticed recently that a lot more people use it now than did before, and it can cause weaving and bumping problems on the platform itself, which I think can be dangerous (as Burrard and Granville are fairly narrow platforms).

I don't recall seeing this particular sign before. It's by the Commercial-Broadway station.

Too bad they can't replace the middle over-head and widen it to it's max width. It would drastically help over-crowding. I think

Wouldn't you run the risk of not fitting wider trains in the future, then?

Has there been any update on the Metrotown Passerelle? Is it going to be built? Where is it going to be built? When is it going to be built?
